Mask Requirement Extended to Feb. 15
A statewide mandate implemented Dec. 15 requiring masks indoors in all public places regardless of vaccine status has been extended through Feb. 15. The California Department of Public Health made the announcement this week as the Omicron variant continues to increase in prevalence across the state and country. County health officials follow state requirements and urge county residents to wear a mask indoors. The City of Coronado will operate under the same conditions it did before the mask mandate was lifted June 15, which focused on education and compliance. In addition, the City requires masks at City facilities and is capping capacity at 50% for public meetings for social distancing purposes. Zoom public comments are available, however, 24-hours advance notice is requested.

Power Outage to Affect Spreckels Park Restrooms

SDG&E is planning to perform maintenance on Monday, Jan. 10, at 8:30 a.m. for up to 4 hours that may require service to be interrupted at the Spreckels Park restroom building. Public Services & Engineering crews will place signs notifying the public about the maintenance around the building the Thursday prior to the outage and ensure the restrooms are locked. The flushers are electronic, not manual, so flushing will not work during the outage. As soon as the power is on, the restrooms will be reopened.

Public Services & Engineering Project Updates
Aquatics Center and High School Tennis Courts Lighting

All lights that are part of the Aquatics Center and Tennis Court Lighting project were installed by the end of December, including automated light controls at the Aquatics Center. Photometric light level readings taken at all tennis courts confirmed that they exceed International Tennis Federation Class II illumination requirements as specified. Final corrosion resistant paint coating of the light poles has been rescheduled to January due to the rain that occurred during the last two weeks of December. The new LED lights are energy efficient and turn on instantly.
California American Water Asphalt Repairs: California American Water has scheduled asphalt repair work along Glorietta Boulevard between Miguel and Monterey avenues on Wednesday, Jan.12. Traffic controls will be in place. Please use caution when driving through the area.

Arts & Culture
Banners Honor Coronado Floral Association's 100th Anniversary: This year, the Coronado Floral Association is celebrating 100 years since its founding in 1922. To mark this important milestone, Coronado has installed banners on 30 street poles along Orange Avenue from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas. The banners are on display through the end of March. The Coronado Flower Show was founded to ease Coronado political unrest. Local resident Maude Taylor is credited by local historians with the idea of hosting a community flower show to unite feuding residents. She recruited her husband, Harold Taylor, who took on the project and the flower show was born. From its inception, the event has been held in Spreckels Park and has grown into the largest tented flower show in the nation. This year’s show is slated for April 23-24. The City Council approved the banner designs and installation in November. The City of Coronado adopted the Orange Avenue Banner Program in 2016. The program is funded through the Discover Coronado Community Improvement Fund. For more information, contact Kelly Purvis at (619) 522-2633 or kpurvis@coronado.ca.us

Tobias and Gob, two adorable guinea pigs, are this week’s Pets of the Week. If you have never considered guinea pigs as pets, you might be surprised how easy they are to keep. Guinea pigs are sweet and social. Tobias is brown and white and a mature male and Gob is black and white and a young adult. Both love snacks and a variety of good and healthy food including timothy hay, pellets, bell pepper, leafy greens and citrus. Their adoption fee is $25 each. To find out more about Tobias and Gob, call Paws of Coronado, which runs the city’s Animal Care Facility at (619) 522-7371.
