Fourth of July Celebration Planning Underway
|
|
|
|
|
To help residents and visitors plan a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July weekend, the City has created a handy list of frequently asked questions for the upcoming three-day holiday weekend.
The list answers important questions such as when the fireworks start, where can you park and what time do the medians open.

New Water-Testing System Increases Closures in Coronado
|
|
|
|
Some residents have noticed that Coronado has experienced an increase in beach closures in recent weeks. San Diego County health officials have closed Coronado beach three times since May 10. This follows the implementation of a new, more sensitive ocean-water testing technology that provides faster results.

'Crossing Paths' Art Installed at Coronado Shores Walkway
|
|
|
|
A new piece of public art was dedicated this week at the beach in front of the Coronado Shores. About 75 people gathered Wednesday, June 8, to celebrate Coronado’s “Crossing Paths” by kinetic sculptor Amos Robinson.

Coronado Police Department Incidents
|
|
|
|
|
Officers observed a vehicle parked in the red zone in the parking lot located at First Street and D Avenue last weekend. Two male juveniles were arrested after officers saw assault-style weapons inside the car in plain view. A search of the vehicle revealed two additional handguns. The vehicle also contained drugs. The juveniles were charged with gun and drug possession.

Intermediate Knitting Classes
|
|
|
|
Who really wrote Shakespeare’s plays? Join the San Diego Shakespeare Society for an authorship forum that will feature a short documentary, expert speaker and a moderated debate in the Winn Room on Sunday, June 12, from 2 to 4 p.m.
|
|
A series of classes for those who want to go beyond the basics of knitting will begin on Wednesday, June 15, from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Ruby Room at the Library. Intermediate Knitting will start with a discussion and practice of different stitches. All materials provided.

Next Summer Festival
Concert Set for June 17
Grammy award winning pianist/soprano saxophonist, Kamau Kenyatta, and Daneen Wilburn will perform as part of the Summer Festival Concerts series from 1 to 2 p.m. on Friday, June 17, in the Winn Room.

Kids Summer Cooking Camps: Cooking ‘round the World is hosting an exciting array of culinary camps at the Community Center this summer. Instructors will share their love for culture, diversity and imagination with a gastronomic twist. Children ages 6-13 years old will receive expert instruction while they learn a necessary life skill in a creative and fun way. Themes include: Star Wars, Harry Potter, the Cartoon Network, the Marvel Universe and Disney. Junior chefs will mix and make dishes like Toy Story Pizza Planet Pizza, Butter Beer Pancakes, Spiderman Pretzel Webs, Naruto Ramen Noodle Bowls and much more. Camps are Monday through Friday between June 27 and August 12, 2022. Call (619) 522-7342 for more information.

Summer Pickleball: Pickleball is one of the fastest growing sports in America. It is a combination of tennis, badminton, ping pong and racquetball, and it’s fun. It’s fast-paced and easy to learn, great exercise, lots of fun, and good for all ages. Our beginner clinics, on the last Monday of the month (June 27, July 25, and August 29) are a great way to get started. Beginner classes are held at Cays Park from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Paddles are provided. Advanced beginner, intermediate and advanced clinics are also available throughout the summer.

Trails and Ales: Take a Trails and Ales trip to San Elijo Nature Center to learn from a trained docent about the beautiful wetland habitats along the 3-mile trail. This moderate interactive hike will have some expected challenges, tons of beautiful scenery and outdoor fun. We will have lunch at Las Olas Restaurant. Lunch and drinks are not included in the cost of the trip. Cost is $50 for residents; $60 for nonresidents. Participants will meet at the Spreckels Center, 1019 Seventh St., at 8:15 a.m. the day of the trip. Transportation is included. Call (619) 522-7343 for more details, or reserve your spot.

Local Nonprofit Banner Series: The Orange Avenue Banner Program is accepting applications for local nonprofit organizations seeking to display banners during either the September 15 through Thanksgiving series or the January through March series. The deadline is June 17.
