Tennis and Pickleball Court Resurfacing Project
The City Council has agreed to increase the number of pickleball courts in Coronado. At a meeting this week, the Council directed staff to make some changes to various courts while undergoing a resurfacing project. To create more playing area for pickleball players, the Council directed staff to convert an existing tennis court in the Cays into dedicated pickleball courts and the basketball court into more pickleball courts, keeping the hoops in place, if feasible. Staff also was directed to ensure that at least one set of the new pickleball courts includes lighting. The Council asked that the Coronado Cays Park Master Plan architect make the best use of the space around the Cays Tennis Courts and consider including a basketball court and more pickleball courts as part of the space. After receiving court usage data and reviewing the results of the 2022 Tennis and Pickleball Community Survey, the Council also directed staff to pursue public-private partnerships for tennis and pickleball facilities and to make improvements at both Cays Park and the Glorietta Bay Tennis Center to add lighting to increase playing capacity and provide a better socializing experience. Staff also was directed to replace a soft court with a hard court.
Hometown Banner Ceremony Set for May 21; Community Invited
The City of Coronado invites the community to its next Hometown Heroes Banner Dedication Ceremony on Saturday, May 21. The City will honor its own “hometown heroes” with banners hung along Third and Fourth streets, the City’s “Avenue of Heroes” from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island, and with a celebration of their military careers. The ceremony for the 14th Group of honorees will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center, 650 D Ave. The City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422, the Avenue of Heroes Neighborhood Association, the Hometown Banner Committee and the Coronado Historical Association developed the program in 2014 to recognize veterans or active duty service members who live or have lived in Coronado. The ceremony will be broadcast live on the City’s Facebook page and will be produced and rebroadcast on Coronado TV. If you would like to nominate someone, get more details on the May 21 ceremony or watch archived ceremonies, visit CommentCoronado.org.
City Creates Film to Mark Bike Month in Coronado
This week, the City Council proclaimed May as Bike Month in Coronado. The City will celebrate National Bike Month by hosting activities throughout the month, including a special screening and discussion of a city-produced video at the Coronado Historical Association on Tuesday, May 10. The video, “Along for the Ride: A Century of Biking in Coronado,” was sponsored by a Go-By-Bike grant from the San Diego Association of Governments in support of biking. The event is free. To RSVP, visit the Coronado Historical Association website or the City’s CommentCoronado.org webpage. Following remarks by former San Diego County Supervisor Greg Cox, an advocate for the Bayshore Bikeway, and a showing of the film, a panel of local riders will discuss the film, bicycling in Coronado and the future of biking. The film will screen all summer on Coronado TV and may be viewed on the City’s social media sites. The City encourages residents to participate in Bike to Work Day set for May 19. Coronado will have a “pit stop” near the Community Center with giveaways and refreshments for riders.
Events Planned for National Preservation Month
The City Council this week proclaimed May as Historic Preservation Month. The Council presented a plaque to a property owner whose home was historically designated in 2021 and called attention to four others similarly honored but who could not attend. Due to the pandemic, no Council presentation was held in 2021. Coronado MainStreet, the Coronado Historical Association, and the City will mark Preservation Month with various events. On Thursday, May 12, a free Preservation Symposium will be held virtually at 5:30 p.m. via Zoom and Facebook Live. The event has filled up and no more reservations are being accepted for the live event. However, you may still view the symposium via Zoom. See the link below. California's Historic Preservation Officer Julianne Polanco will introduce this year's presenting speaker, Shannon Lauchner Pries, a historian from the Office of Historic Preservation, who will share the state’s historic preservation initiatives and discuss historic districts. Coronado Associate Planner Tricia Olsen will discuss how to designate a home a historic resource. The Coronado Historical Association 's popular Historic Home Tour on Mother’s Day has sold out.
Sgt. Anthony Flores Named Coronado's Employee of the Year

Coronado Police Sgt. Anthony Flores was named the 2021 employee of the year at an employee recognition event last week. Flores, who has worked for the city since February 2012, was nominated by his co-workers for the employee of the quarter for his role in implementing the Ride to Live program. The successful one-day motorcycle safety course is taught by certified police motorcycle officers and gives motorcyclists the skills they need to stay safe on the road. The program is free. Flores also has served as a cadet instructor, firearm instructor, and led the department in editing and publishing the field handbook. Through all of his accomplishments, Flores has proved to be a self-motivated and dedicated service member. Congratulations to Sgt. Flores.
Memorial Day Holiday Schedule 2022

City to Launch New Municipal Website Monday, May 9
The City is preparing to launch a new municipal website next month that is attractive, user-friendly and much improved. Work on the new website is wrapping up with some finishing touches after going through a redesign process by CivicPlus, a leading government website provider. Users will see a familiar but new website with a cleaner look and easier navigation. The Coronado City Council approved moving forward with the project in 2021 as the existing website is outdated. The new website will improve information availability, maintain transparency, increase responsiveness, provide current information, and implement user-friendly navigation. The launch date for the new website is May 9. The Library and Coronado Cultural Arts will have stand-alone but linked websites. The Library will launch with the City’s website and look for Cultural Arts in mid-June. The website will be accessible at the same address: www.coronado.ca.us.
Ocean Boulevard Street, Sidewalk Improvement Project Update
The contractor on a project to improve access and pedestrian mobility on the west side of Ocean Boulevard has constructed the majority of sidewalk between Alameda Boulevard and Ocean Drive. This coming week, crews will work to construct bulb outs at Pine Street, Marina Avenue, G Avenue and Alameda Boulevard. Due to some delays caused by a materials shortage, work to construct the sidewalk at Central Beach, Isabella Avenue to Alameda Boulevard, will occur toward the end of the month. Pavement rehabilitation of Ocean Boulevard will begin after all curb, gutter, and sidewalk work has been completed. Traffic and access will be impacted.
Free Summer Shuttle Kickoff Set for May 27
Service on the Free Summer Shuttle begins the Friday before the Memorial Day weekend with a kickoff event to introduce a colorful new bus wrap. The new wrap is based on a public art mural that was recently removed from the old Cora Mart building when Vons began its expansion into the space. The kickoff event will begin at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 27, at Spreckels Park. After the ceremony, the community is invited to take a ride. Light refreshments will be served. The City worked with Discover Coronado, which funds the wraps every year, on the design. Shuttles will run through Sept. 5 from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and one hour later Friday and Saturday. There will be free MTS day passes available for Coronado Cays residents and special service on the Fourth of July. Visit CommentCoronado.org for more details.

Boards, Commissions & Committees
Board, Commission and Committee Vacancies
There are currently no vacancies. However, the City of Coronado encourages, promotes and welcomes the participation of citizens in the decision-making process. The City has a number of standing citizen commissions, committees, and boards which provide public input to the City government of Coronado. Standing committees serve as an important link between the citizens of Coronado and the City Council by communicating values, attitudes and needs of the community within the special area of their group’s assignment. They are an integral part of the process, which contributes to sound government. There are more than 120 citizens presently serving the City on committees, giving generously of their time. The City benefits from the expertise and energy of these individuals. If you have any questions about volunteering, call the City Clerk’s Office at (619) 522-7320.
