Coronado Island Film Festival Runs Through Sunday, Nov. 14
The Coronado Film Festival, which runs through Sunday, Nov. 14, is celebrating its sixth anniversary with an in-person event. Last year’s event was entirely virtual. You can tell the Film Festival is going on by stars on downtown sidewalks highlighting actors and filmmakers. Scan the QR code on the star to learn more about their connections to Coronado. Film critic and author Leonard Maltin will once again serve as honorary head juror. The City is a founding sponsor and proud to be part of the events, many held in City facilities. The Community Center hosted the 2021 Kick-off Bash! with 17 local restaurants participating. The Spreckels Center is the hospitality site and the Public Library is screening all the short movies. Additionally, the opening film -- “C’mon C’mon” – screened in the historic Village Theater, which also is serving as the site of many screenings. Tickets are still available online. Visit www.coronadofilmfest.com for details.
Upcoming City Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule
The City will observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Nov. 26. Most City facilities will be closed but some will be open with varying hours of operation. Here’s the full schedule.
Warming Trend May Require Visits to Cool Places
The National Weather Service says the warmer and dryer conditions this week will weaken by Saturday, Nov. 13. Santa Ana winds will end and gradual cooling will start near the coast and spread inland through early next week. Before it cools, temperatures are expected to reach into the upper 80s. The Spreckels Center and Library are air-conditioned and open for residents to "Retreat from the Heat!" Please note that while the Spreckels Center is being used for the Film Festival, the lounge will be open on Friday, Nov. 12, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. However, there will be no classes, cards or activities in the building. The Library will be open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Aquatics Center is closed due to annual maintenance.
City’s Port Representative Talks to Commissioner Candidates
Applications for the City’s representative on the Port Commission are due Nov. 15. The City’s Port Commissioner addressed potential applicants for his soon-to-be-vacant position earlier this week. Garry Bonelli, who has served two, four-year terms as Coronado’s representative, will be stepping down at the beginning of the year. The public forum allowed the community and potential applicants to ask questions about the San Diego Unified Port District and the duties, responsibilities and time commitments for the position. The City Council will hold interviews during a special Nov. 30 meeting. Applications can be found on the City’s website, under Boards, Commissions and Committees.
Reminder to Dog Owners of Cays Park Code of Conduct

Parks have opened for youth sports and the City reminds residents of the city's Code of Conduct for dog owners at South Cays Park. Dogs must be on-leash at all times outside of the leash-free area. The only area dogs are allowed off-leash is the marked dog run area of South Cays Park. Residents must clean up dog waste. While parks were closed, dog owners began walking around the empty fields, many with dogs off their leashes. Now that the fields are filled with players, there have been times when dogs are running up to youth using the fields or leaving waste in the youth playing fields. The City asks that dog owners use the dog run area only for off-leash dogs and to leash dogs when not in the dog run.
Third Climate Action Plan Workshop Held Last Week
On Nov. 4, the City conducted a virtual workshop to discuss the Public Review Draft Climate Action Plan. A recording of the workshop and the slide presentation are available on the commentcoronado.org project page. All questions and comments received will be addressed in the finalized draft Climate Action Plan that will be presented to the City Council for its consideration in early 2022. The City is currently accepting public comments on the draft Climate Action Plan via email to [email protected] or click on the “submit comments” tab below to provide comments. Comments are due by Friday, Nov. 12, 2021.
Deadline Extended for Coronado Community Read 2022

The deadline to submit nominations for the 2022 Coronado Community Read has been extended to Nov. 14. The program is designed to unite the community through the shared reading of a single book and encourage participation in planned events around the theme of the title, which is selected by the readers. To nominate a book, visit commentcoronado.org or find a ballot box at the Library, City Hall, Coronado Historical Association, or Bay Books.

Hometown Heroes Ceremony Honored 13 Locals Nov. 6
The City honored 13 Hometown Heroes on Saturday, Nov. 6, with a special in-person ceremony unveiling their banners now hanging along the Avenue of Heroes. It was the 13th Group of local military members to be so honored and the first “live” ceremony in two years. More than 200 people attended to listen to the stories of our local heroes. The City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422, the Avenue of Heroes Neighborhood Association, the Hometown Banner Committee and the Coronado Historical Association developed the program in 2014 to recognize veterans or active duty service members who live or have lived in Coronado. If you would like to nominate someone, visit the City’s website or CommentCoronado.org.
Coronado, EDCO Fall Cleanup Totals
The City had a successful Fall Cleanup event, which was held Oct. 18-22. Cleanup events, held twice a year, allow Coronado residents to get rid of unwanted furniture, mattresses, appliances, and green waste during their regularly scheduled trash collection day. This year, EDCO crews picked up more than 64 tons of trash and 8 tons of recycled materials. One 40-yard container of mulch was made available free to residents during the same week. The City thanks EDCO for providing this service.
Port Master Plan Update Available for Review, Comments
The Port of San Diego is updating its Port Master Plan and invites the public to review and provide feedback on the associated Draft Program Environmental Impact Report. The Master Plan is a water and land use plan that designates specific areas of San Diego Bay and waterfront for maritime, fishing, visitor-serving commercial, recreational, conservation, and institutional uses. The plan determines where port activities should take place, where recreational amenities should be located, and where commercial uses like hotels may be built. Comments will be accepted through Thursday, December 23, 2021. The Draft Program EIR includes the latest Draft Port Master Plan Update. Public Services & Engineering Projects

Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade: The contractor on a project to upgrade Trinidad Pump Station will be performing start-up operations this week to test the functions of the new pump station. SDG&E is scheduled to be onsite Tuesday, Nov. 23, to re-energize the station for use. Landscaping of the site will occur shortly afterward.
Parker Pump Station Replacement: The structure at 800 Coronado Ave. has been demolished, the next step in constructing the new Parker Pump Station and surrounding green space. This week, mulch was placed onsite to stabilize the soil, a stormwater Best Management Practice, to prevent soil from migrating during rain events. The site will remain clear until construction begins, which is anticipated for mid-2022. (Photo is pre-mulch)
Aquatics Center, High School Tennis Courts Lighting: The contractor on a project to upgrade all public tennis court lighting continues to replace the existing lights to improve energy efficiency and provide International Tennis Federation Class II standards of play illumination. Corrosion resistant paint is being applied to refresh the poles. The existing light heads on the north side of the high school courts have been removed. New light head installation and pole painting are scheduled to occur before moving to the south side courts. Throughout the project, a maximum of two courts at a time will be closed for construction. At the Aquatics Center last week, the existing light heads were removed, poles painted, and brackets installed. Light head installation and junction box painting are scheduled to be complete this week during the biannual maintenance facility shutdown. Bird spikes will be added to all light poles. The new LED lights will turn on instantly; no more waiting for the lights to warm up.
