Upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday Schedule |
|
|
|
The City will observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Thursday, Nov. 25, and Friday, Nov. 26. Most City facilities will be closed but some will be open with varying hours of operation. Here’s the full schedule. |

Turkey Coloring Contest Winners Announced |
|
|
|
Recreation and Golf Services and Coronado Junior Women’s Club Turkey Coloring Contest 2021 received 250 entries this year. Of those entries, nine winners were chosen in three age categories and presented with their awards at the Nov. 16 City Council meeting. Winners received a stuffed plush turkey, a pie and Coronado Currency, good at local businesses to purchase a special item for the family Thanksgiving celebration. Thank you to all who entered the contest and congratulations to the winners. The entries will be on display at the Coronado Community Center for a few more weeks. |

Coronado 2021 Holiday Events |

Breakfast with Santa: Breakfast with Santa is back this year and will be held at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 11. This event sells out fast so call (619) 522-7342 or stop by the Community Center to get your tickets. Breakfast with Santa includes a French toast station, scrambled eggs, bacon, fresh fruit kabobs, juice, coffee and tea. Children will create holiday crafts, spin the prize wheel, enjoy a visit from Santa Claus and other holiday characters. This is a great opportunity to get your family photos with Santa. Cost is $12 for children (12 and under) and $16 for adults.

Letters to Santa: Letters to Santa Claus will be accepted Dec. 1 through Dec. 15 at the Community Center. Send your letter to the North Pole via our North Pole Express Mailbox and be sure to include a self-addressed, stamped envelope so Santa can answer letters.

|
|
Ride the Lights: Ride the Lights is set for Sunday, Dec. 12. Meet at Spreckels Park for the 5 p.m. ride through Coronado to see the decorations. Make sure you have night lights and helmets. Enjoy cookies, cocoa and other holiday festivities after the ride. Brought to you by the City of Coronado and its Mobility Commission. Don't forget to decorate your bike for the 2.9-mile route. Rain will cancel the event.

Other Holiday Events: A number of holiday programs and activities also are planned, including Hanukkah Storytime on Nov. 30 at the Library and Cider Sipping and Tree Decorating on Dec. 1 at the Spreckels Center. Parker Pump Station Design Ready for Public Feedback |

|
The design of the Parker Pump Station Replacement Project, including a new passive, landscaped space for the public to enjoy, is scheduled to be presented to the City’s Design Review Commission at 3 p.m. on Dec. 8. The application includes architectural and landscape plans, renderings, and a material board, and can be viewed in person at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, or on the City's Comment Coronado page link below . Property owners and residents are encouraged to review the application and provide any feedback on the design prior to the Dec. 8 meeting. However, the public also may attend the meeting and provide input on the design. The project manager, Katie Odiorne, will be available on Tuesday, Nov. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. at the existing Parker Pump Station, 780 Coronado Ave., to discuss the design or answer any questions you may have relating to the project.

Rash of Weekend Catalytic Converter Thefts, Protect Yourself |

|
|
Coronado Police say that over the weekend in Coronado, six catalytic converters were reported stolen, a crime that has become quite common across Southern California. The thefts were in the 700, 800 and 1000 blocks of B Avenue, the 600 and 800 blocks of Guadalupe Avenue, and the 1500 block of Second Street. The catalytic converter looks similar to a muffler. Thieves crawl under vehicles, cut the catalytic converter out and sell the precious metals inside. The crime only takes a minute or two, and it’s usually done at night. To avoid being a victim, consider the following:
- Talk to your mechanic about installing a catalytic converter clamp (cat clamp)
- Weld your converter to the car frame
- Park in a garage when possible
- Install cameras in your driveway
- Park in an area where there are surveillance cameras
- Park in well-lit areas
- Ask your mechanic to engrave your license plate or vin # on your catalytic converter

Students Honored for Bravery: Coronado Police Chief Chuck Kaye honored Coronado 5th grade students Dominic Parma and Lucas Bartowitz for their bravery during a medical emergency that occurred earlier this month at the Coronado Skatepark. The boys found an injured skater and immediately notified Recreation Department staff, flagged down first responders and then comforted the injured child. The boys rushed into action and did not hesitate helping everyone on scene. The City thanks them for their bravery.

Aquatics Center, High School Tennis Courts Lighting: Most of the work to install new light heads on the north side of the High School tennis courts is complete. Work on the south side courts will not start until the north side is completed to maintain a maximum closure of no more than two courts at a time. All light heads and shields, bird spikes, brackets, and lighting controls were installed last week at the Aquatics Center. The pool has reopened with improved lighting that meets Illuminating Engineering Society standards for pools and pool decks with high activity and NCAA illuminance targets for intercollegiate play for swimming pools.

Sculpture Exhibit Opening: A sculpture exhibit will open at the Library on Saturday, Nov. 20 with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. The exhibit, titled “25 Years of Monumental Art: It All Began in Coronado,” is the small-scale sculptural works by Christopher Slatoff, creator of “Sheltering Wings” at Grand Caribe Shoreline Park, and his sculpting partner, Elisabeth Pollnow. The exhibit runs through Jan. 10 in the Library's exhibit gallery

Holiday Book Sale: The Friends of the Coronado Public Library will host a holiday book sale on the Library Lawn, outside the Winn Room, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 20. Items for sale include a large selection of DVDs and audiobooks, holiday cards, and comic books. Proceeds from the sale support Library programs for all ages.

Thanksgiving Week Camps: Recreation & Golf Services will host two camps next week before Thanksgiving, both will be held Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 22-24. Xtreme Dodgeball Camp will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Coronado Community Center Gym for children ages 6-12. Dodgeball, Capture the Flag, and Hide and Seek are all included. Cost is $140 for residents and $150 for nonresidents. 5ive Tool Baseball Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Tidelands Park. Baseball players ages 5-12 can increase their skill levels in throwing, hitting, fielding, catching and running in this camp. Cost is $150 for residents and $160 for nonresidents. Rose, a 2-year-old Calico cat, is this week’s Pet of the Week. Rose came to the Animal Care Facility as a mom who was fierce and protective. Once her kittens were adopted, she was found to be sweet and tender. She’s calm and enjoys peaceful and quiet places and would do well with other cats. Her adoption fee is $50.
