|
Village Theatre Plans 'James Bond' Reopening Oct. 8 |
|
|
|
The long-anticipated reopening of the Village Theatre is set for Friday, Oct. 8, with the screening of the new James Bond movie “No Time to Die.” The City is pleased that Coronado's beloved movie theater which has been closed since last year due to public health restrictions, will be finally screening films again. The theater was set to reopen in August, however, shipping delays for new seats resulted in the continued closure. The seats will hopefully arrive prior to the end of 2021. The Village Theatre will initially open the main auditorium only with a decision on the two screening rooms pending. The 1940s-era theater underwent an extensive renovation more than a decade ago after it fell into a bad state of disrepair. The City got involved and together with Vintage Cinemas reopened the theater on June 24, 2011. When the new seats finally arrive, the installation may require the theatre to have a modified program schedule temporarily.

Columbus Day 2021 Holiday Schedule |

|
|
The City of Coronado will observe the Columbus Day holiday on Monday, Oct. 11, and reminds residents and businesses that some municipal facilities will remain open and some will close. Public Services will not sweep streets Monday. EDCO will perform regular residential trash collection. Certain City of Coronado departments and services will be open with varying hours of operation. 'Halloween Happening' Events Planned for October 29 |
|
|
|
Three City facilities will offer residents a special “Halloween Happening” this year with fun activities for all ages on Friday, Oct. 29. Dress up in your best Halloween costumes to get in the spirit. Families are welcome to attend a party at Spreckels Park from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. with festive music, entertainment, trick-or-treating, and “Spooktacular” games. The John D. Spreckels Center will host a Halloween Bash for those 21 and up at 6 p.m. The cost for the Spreckels Center party is $13 for residents and $18 for nonresidents and includes hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. The Library will be screening Disney’s “Hocus Pocus” free on the lawn and will also have a spooky scavenger hunt from 6 to 8 p.m. The City will close down Margarita Avenue for Halloween. Coronado MainStreet is planning the return of "Downtown Goes Ghostly" on Sunday, Oct. 31, from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This beloved community event is supported by a grant from the City of Coronado Community Grant Program. Navy Fence Construction Near Dog Beach Ongoing |
|
|
|
A project to replace a chain link fence on Navy property parallel to Dog Beach will be completed Dec. 10. Work began Sept. 21 and the area has been cordoned off until the project is complete. Sand that has accumulated against the chain link fence over the years is being spread throughout the Dog Beach area to keep it on the beach. No equipment or work is obstructing access to Dog Beach and the area largely remains open.

County Law Enforcement Motor Association Annual Competition |
|
|
|
Coronado Police motorcycle officers competed in an annual motor competition on Saturday, Sept. 25, in Alpine. Motor officers from as far away as Arizona and Mexico also participated in the competition. Coronado Officer Steven Snodgrass took First Place in the slow speed and maneuvers event. Congratulation, Officer Snodgrass.

Coronado Chamber Celebrates City Employees |

|
|
The Coronado Chamber of Commerce honored City employees and other local heroes earlier this week at its annual “Celebrate Coronado” event. The Chamber honored the City’s:
- 2020 Employee of the Year Denise Johnson
- 2019 Employee of the Year Tricia Olsen
- 2020 Police Officer of the Year Det. Jade Gutzmer
- 2020 Firefighter of the Year Capt. Brandon Ihde
- 2019 Firefighter of the Year Capt. Ted Porter
- 2020 Lifeguard of the Year Garison Covel, and
- 2019 Lifeguard of the Year Preston Lujan.
Congratulations to all the award recipients and thanks to the Chamber of Commerce for honoring City employees.

Electric Vehicle Charging Stations to be Upgraded |
|
|
|
On Tuesday, Oct. 5, Blink Charging will upgrade its four existing electric vehicle charging stations in the City at no charge. The stations scheduled for upgrade are two EV chargers at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, and two at Vernetti Stadium parking lot at B Avenue and Second Street. Blink is asking EV charging users to not charge their vehicle in these locations and to not park in the EV parking stalls on Oct. 5. City staff will post notices as a reminder.

Rideshare Week is Oct. 4-8; Learn How to Share the Ride |

|
The City is helping promote Rideshare Week, Oct. 4-8, with a City Council proclamation at the Oct. 5 meeting and sharing ways people can participate in alternative commuting programs if they are back to work. Here are some ways commuters can share the ride:

Get PRONTO: The new way to pay for transit is here. Pay as you go for MTS and NCTD.

Carpool with Waze: Your first ride is free and for each referral, you can receive $10 in carpool rewards after your second carpool ride.

Vanpool in style: Commute with Enterprise has recent-model SUVs and vans. Remember, all vanpools get SANDAG’s $400 monthly subsidy.

Take the pledge: California Clean Air Day is Wednesday, Oct. 6. Share the ride to reduce pollution.

|
Annual Palm Pruning: A reminder that the City’s contractor is pruning palms in parkways and parks throughout Coronado as part of an annual palm-pruning program. Palm fruiting and hanging fronds can occur simultaneously throughout town so the City must be diligent in its work to remove both. The contractor will begin work in the Cays and then will work on the east side of Orange Avenue. From there, the contractor will start work on the west side Orange Avenue and expects to finish by the end of January. “No Parking” signs may appear on short notice when the contractor has been able to get ahead of schedule. The City appreciates residents’ quick response in moving vehicles out of the contractor’s path so the work can be completed.

Parker Pump Station Replacement Project: The City recently acquired the property at 800 Coronado Ave., just south of the existing Parker Pump Station site. The purchase allows the City to improve the project in a variety of ways that benefit both the City and surrounding residents. The design to reconfigure the site is underway. The existing structure at the site will be demolished the week of Oct. 25, prior to the project’s start, and will be completed this month. Asbestos remediation is scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 4, and is expected to be completed by Wednesday, Oct. 6. The Police and Fire Departments will conduct search and rescue style training once the hazardous material is removed. The City will reconfigure the site to provide about 6,000 square feet of publicly accessible green space. The City will now be able to relocate all planned above-ground structures to 75 feet behind the face of curb along Coronado Avenue. The property purchase will eliminate the need for a temporary, above-ground storm water and wastewater bypass system during construction by keeping the existing pump station operational throughout construction of the new station. Finally, the site will eliminate the need to close the intersection of Eighth Street and Coronado Avenue for the entire duration of construction.

Country Club Infiltration Reduction: The injection grouting and coating of the existing storm drain structures on the Country Club Infiltration Reduction project was substantially completed last week with the only remaining items consisting of testing the new coating material. Testing is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 4-5, of next week.
|
|
|
|
Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade: The contractor on the Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade project completed the ring foundation. The new manhole section will be set shortly afterward, at which time the dewatering system can be dismantled, and backfilling of the new manhole section will occur. Once backfilling is complete, the contractor’s electrical subcontractor will begin installing the underground electrical system.

- Recommendation of the Cultural Arts Commission to accept the bronze sculpture "The Knot" donated by the Wood Family Trust and install it in Glorietta Bay Promenade Park; and

Turkey Coloring Contest: The Recreation Department’s annual Turkey Coloring Contest for Coronado students begins Wednesday, Oct. 6 and ends Thursday, Nov. 4. Students must color the printed turkey with crayons, markers or colored pencils and write your contact information on the page. Drop off the entry in person at the Community Center or by email to [email protected]. One entry per child. Please no glitter, sequins or stickers. Past winners are not eligible. Coronado students only. Winners will be recognized at the Nov. 16 City Council meeting.

Coronado Cays Pickleball Tournament: This Saturday, Oct. 2 and Sunday, Oct. 3, Coronado Cays Park will be hosting the Optimist Club of Coronado’s Pickleball Tournament. Courts 2, 3 and 5 are reserved for the tournament and will be closed for public use Friday evening, Oct. 1, through Sunday evening, Oct. 3.

Autumn Concert Series: The organist for the San Diego Padres baseball team will perform a mix of songs from his own jazz album on the piano in the Winn Room on Friday, Oct. 8, from 1 to 2 p.m. Bobby Cressey will perform songs from his album titled “Cali Native” as well as some jazz and pop covers and you might even hear a version of “Take Me Out to the Ballgame.” Registration is recommended but not required.

Storytelling Event: An eclectic cultural afternoon at the Coronado Public Library on Saturday, Oct. 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. will feature a storytelling exchange with Botswana, Africa, as the topic. Keynote speakers will be San Diego City Councilwoman Marni von Wilpert, who was in the Peace Corps in Botswana, and NBC reporter Leloba Seishiro, who is from Botswana. Black Storytellers of San Diego, San Diego Storytellers, and So Say We All will provide additional storytelling and there will be live music and refreshments in the Winn Room.

Sensational Solar System: The first week of October is National Space Week and staff from the Fleet Science Center will be at the Coronado Public Library to lead some out-of-this-world educational activities about our solar system. The event will take place in the Winn Room on Monday, Oct. 4, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and is geared toward third through fifth graders. Please register here.

Mayan Palaces: Learn about the history, architecture, and people that made ancient Mayan Palaces a centerpiece of Mayan culture from archaeology professor, Dr. Ryan Mongelluzzo. Dr. Mongelluzzo has worked extensively in the Mayan lowlands of Belize and Guatemala including the sites of La Milpa and Holmul, and is currently working at the site of Ucanal, Guatemala, using drone-based LiDAR to map the site. This talk will take place in the Winn Room on Thursday, Oct. 7, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Registration is recommended but not required.
