First 'Live' Hometown Heroes Ceremony in 2 Years Set for Nov. 6
The City is hosting its first "live" Hometown Heroes Banner ceremony in two years on Saturday, Nov. 6, and encourages the community to attend. Thirteen Hometown Heroes will be honored with banners hung along the “Avenue of Heroes” on Third and Fourth streets from Orange Avenue to Naval Air Station North Island. The ceremony will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center, 650 D Ave. Due to the pandemic, the City postponed the spring 2020 event and held the next two biannual ceremonies virtually. The City, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2422, the Third and Fourth Neighborhood Association, the Hometown Banner Committee and the Coronado Historical Association worked together to develop the Hometown Hero Banner program in 2014 to recognize veterans or active duty service members who live or have lived in Coronado. The ceremony will be livestreamed and rebroadcast on Coronado TV. If you would like to nominate someone, get more details on the livestreamed Nov. 6 ceremony or watch archived ceremonies, visit the City’s website or CommentCoronado.org.
'Halloween Happening' Events & More Holiday Fun

The Library will host Exploding Pumpkin Science which will feature two mini science experiments on Tuesday, Oct. 19, from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Library Park. Use an acid and base chemical reaction to pop a plastic bag. Then find out how many rubber bands it takes to explode a pumpkin.

Additionally, the City will close down Margarita Avenue for Halloween and Coronado MainStreet is planning the return of "MainStreet Goes Ghostly" on the holiday from 3:30 to 5 p.m. This event is supported by a grant from the City's Community Grant Program. PAWS of Coronado will get in the spirit with a pet costume contest fundraising event at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 27, at McP's Irish Pub & Grill.
Prescription Drug Take-Back Day - No Questions Asked
The Coronado Police Department, along with the Drug Enforcement Agency other local law enforcement agencies, will hold a prescription drug take-back day on Saturday, Oct. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. In honor of National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, officers will be on the sidewalk at the Police Department, 700 Orange Ave., to assist those turning any unwanted prescription drugs. The service is free and anonymous. No questions asked. The event is designed to prevent the abuse and theft of potentially dangerous expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs by removing the drugs from homes. Flushing prescription drugs down the toilet or throwing them in the trash pose potential safety and health hazards, and the longer they sit around the more likely they are to be misused or abused. Police also will accept vape pens and other e-cigarette devices with no batteries. The Police Department has a collection box in the front lobby available for drop offs anytime during regular business hours.
Climate Action Plan Workshop No. 3 Set for Nov. 4
The City will hold its third Climate Action Plan workshop virtually on Nov. 4. The Climate Action Plan is designed to be a strategic roadmap to help Coronado reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City’s recently completed draft Climate Action Plan will be discussed at the workshop, which will begin a 5 p.m. via Zoom and will be recorded and posted for public viewing for those who cannot attend. Visit the project webpage at Comment Coronado for more information on the Climate Action Plan process. Register in advance for this webinar at https://bit.ly/CAPWorkshopNov4. A confirmation email will provide details about joining the webinar. The City has held two previous workshops to take public input and continues to accept public comments on the draft Climate Action Plan via email at [email protected] or they may be posted on Comment Coronado. Comments are due by Nov. 12. For questions, contact Associate Planner Howard Lee at (619) 522-2423 or [email protected].
City Continues to Monitor Shore After Orange County Oil Spill
A coalition of local, state and federal agencies is responding to a coastal oil spill off Orange County that is impacting beaches extending south to San Diego County. Headed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the Unified Command is sending cleanup assessment teams to monitor, inspect and clean beaches as needed. No tar balls have been reported in Coronado, but Lifeguards continue to patrol the City’s beach for any signs of impacts. Preliminary findings estimate that about 25,000 gallons were released during the oil spill. Those who find tar balls on local San Diego beaches are asked not to touch them or pick them up because they are a hazardous material. Report sightings at [email protected] or contact Coronado Lifeguards at (619) 522-7346.
