New Traffic Signal Soon to be Linked to Existing Stoplights
The new traffic signal at state Route 75 and Avenida Del Sol is scheduled to be integrated into the City's existing adaptive stoplight software next week. This links the stoplights along the Silver Strand at three Navy gates, and at Avenida de las Arenas, Avenida del Sol and Pomona Avenue to manage traffic flow. The integration may take one to two weeks for tuning to optimal performance. The adaptive software will allow the equipment to monitor changing traffic conditions and adjust the signal timing to minimize delays. The Hotel del Coronado continues to work on improvements to the hotel property. Due to construction activity, the Avenida del Sol cul-de-sac is closed during the day just past the new and open entrance to the Hotel del Coronado. After working hours and on weekends, the cul-de-sac is open to the public; however parking is prohibited. The full opening is expected mid-2022.
City Playing Fields Temporarily Closed
Police Department Updates
Senior Volunteers: A new Senior Volunteer Patrol Academy started this week with six recruits. The Senior Volunteer Patrol was started by Officer Kevin Shank in 1995 with a graduating class of 18 volunteers. Since then, the Senior Volunteer Patrol has conducted 21 academies, training more than 130 recruits. It currently has 25 volunteers as it continues to grow as an essential element of the Police Department. Since 2000, the SVP has provided more than 160,000 hours of volunteer support for an estimated savings to the city of over $4 million. These volunteers are the eyes and ears of the Police Department, patrolling streets, beaches, and parks, performing vacation house checks, enforcing 72 hour parking violations, providing traffic control and perimeter support at police and fire scenes, issuing written warnings and citations for illegally parked vehicles, and many other duties. All volunteers were not permitted to work due the pandemic from late March 2020 until August. Their service is invaluable. The City is happy they are back on duty.

Officer Honored: Last week, Coronado Police Officer Darren Hamilton received the Lucky Narc Award from the California Narcotics Officers Association for a proactive traffic stop he made in 2020 which resulted in the seizure of methamphetamine. (Photo: Officer Hamilton second from right)
Drug Take Back Day Results: On Saturday, Oct. 23, the Coronado Police Department participated in the Prescription Drug Take Back event in front of the Police Department. Six boxes of medication, weighing 121 pounds, were collected during the event. This was twice the amount collected last year. The event is designed to prevent the abuse and theft of potentially dangerous, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs by removing the drugs from homes. The Police Department has a collection box in the front lobby available for drop offs anytime during regular business hours.

The ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Coronado High School Performing Arts Center, 650 D Ave. The City postponed the spring 2020 event and held the next two virtually. The program recognizes veterans or active duty service members who live or have lived in Coronado. The ceremony for the 13th Group of local heroes will be livestreamed on the City's YouTube channel and rebroadcast on Coronado TV. To nominate someone, get more details on the livestream or watch archived ceremonies, click the links below.

The Coronado Public Library invites readers to submit their nominations for this year’s Community Read, which is now in its sixth year. Village Theatre Temporary Closure Planned

It is expected that seats in all three screening rooms will be installed beginning early next week. The theater is planning to reopen in time for the Coronado Island Film Festival set for Nov. 10-14. The theater will be the main location for screenings during the film festival.
Third Climate Action Plan Workshop Set for Next Week
The City will hold its third Climate Action Plan workshop on Thursday, Nov. 4, via Zoom. The Climate Action Plan is designed to be a strategic roadmap to help Coronado reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The City’s draft Climate Action Plan will be discussed. The workshop will begin at 5 p.m. and will be recorded and posted for public viewing. Register in advance for this webinar. The City continues to accept public comments on the draft or they may be posted on Comment Coronado. Comments are due by Nov. 12. Public Services & Engineering Projects
Parker Pump Station Replacement Project: Police and Fire have conducted trainings over the last two weeks at the City’s newly acquired property at 800 Coronado Ave. Trainings have included search and rescue scenarios, simulated firefighting, and firefighter survival and ventilation training. Demolition will begin on Monday, Nov. 1, and is anticipated to be completed in three days. The site will remain clear until construction begins on the pump station project which is expected to start as early as next summer. The purchase of the property allows the City to reconfigure the site to provide 6,000 square feet of publicly accessible green space and relocate all planned above-ground structures to 75 feet behind the face of curb along Coronado Avenue. The purchase eliminates the need for a temporary, above-ground storm water and wastewater bypass system during construction by keeping the existing pump station operational throughout construction of the new station. The site also will eliminate the need to close the intersection of Eighth Street and Coronado Avenue for the entire duration of construction.
Tennis Court Complex on Glorietta Boulevard:  Work to replace existing tennis court lights to provide International Tennis Federation Class II standard of play illumination is underway. Corrosion resistant paint is being applied to refresh the poles. Courts 1 and 2 at the Tennis Center Complex were completed on schedule last week. Court 8 upgrades are in progress. To avoid practice and tournament disruption, work will commence at the Coronado High School and Coronado Public Library courts on Monday, Nov. 1, once tennis season ends. Throughout the project, a maximum of two courts at a time will be out of operation. The new LED lights will turn on instantly; no more waiting for the lights to warm up.
Recreation & Golf Services Projects
Coronado Aquatics Notice of Upcoming Maintenance: The Coronado Aquatics Center has its annual pool maintenance closure set for Saturday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 14. The pool will be closed for cleaning and resurfacing. In addition to the expected maintenance, new energy efficient lighting will be installed.
