Survey: Residents Rank Quality of Life High in Coronado
Residents who responded to a comprehensive survey earlier this year say that Coronado is a highly desirable and safe place to live and gave positive ratings to Coronado for its overall quality of life. The results of the 2021 National Community Survey were presented to the City Council this week and can be found on the City’s website. The exceptional quality-of-life ratings were higher than those given in other communities across the nation and higher than Coronado’s peer communities, more than 30 cities with similar populations and other characteristics. Ratings for local government performance, the economy and for health and wellness have improved since 2018. However, growth and traffic issues continue to be a concern in the community. Coronado commissioned the survey in 2011, 2014, 2018 and 2021 and uses the results to measure government performance, monitor trends in resident opinions and guide strategic planning. The National Research Center by Polco helps cities conduct a statistically valid and cost-effective community satisfaction survey.
Public Services & Engineering Projects

Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade:  The contractor on the project to upgrade the Trinidad Pump Station finished Phase I after setting the valve vault this past week and will begin Phase II work by excavating the existing wet well to allow modifications that will convert the station to a submersible pump operation. Phase II of the project is expected to take five weeks to complete.

Country Club Infiltration Reduction: The contractor on the Country Club Infiltration Reduction project returned this week and continued to grout the cleanout and inlet structures. The crew also began coating the existing structures with an epoxy coating which will further protect the infrastructure from infiltration. Construction is anticipated to be completed by the end of the month.

Community Meetings

Cays Park Master Plan Public Workshop
A public workshop was held Thursday, Sept. 8, to briefly summarize what staff has heard from residents over the past 18 months regarding a long-term plan for Cays Park and to obtain consensus regarding design guidelines. About 50 people attended the meeting, which was livestreamed on the City’s Facebook page and is being re-broadcast on Coronado TV. More details will be provided in the coming days and weeks from those design guidelines that received consensus and will be used to develop design elements, including renderings, for the public’s consideration at a future workshop prior to the creation of the master plan. Additional comments are being accepted on the project through Sept. 23 and may be submitted to Jim Newton, Project Engineer. View the presentation given at the meeting, watch the meeting and provide comments by clicking below.

Gubernatorial Recall Election - Sept. 14
Coronado residents voting in the 2021 California Gubernatorial Recall Election will have two in-person voting locations. All San Diego County voters who choose to cast their votes in person will notice a few differences. Voting locations will be open Sept. 11 through Election Day. Voters won’t be tied or assigned to a specific voting location. That means any voter can find their ballot and cast their vote at any of the 221 in-person voting locations open across the County. Voters can find the most convenient voting location for them to cast their vote by checking the Registrar’s Voting Locations Finder map and typing in their address or location. Everyone voting in person will cast their votes on touch-screen ballot marking devices that will print out a paper ballot with their choices that they can review before placing them in the official ballot box to be counted on election night. Coronado’s in-person voting locations will be in the Nautilus Room at the Community Center and at the lounge in the John D. Spreckels Center. Voters can return their ballot in the mail, no postage necessary, or at one of many mail ballot drop-off locations around the county, including at the Coronado Community Center and the Coronado Public Library.

Community Programs

City Banner Program Nonprofit Series Applications Due Sept. 15
The Orange Avenue Banner Program, initiated by the City in 2016 and funded through a Discover Coronado grant, displays banners on the Orange Avenue corridor from First Street to Avenida de las Arenas. The program has two series -- Sept. 15 through Thanksgiving and January through March -- open to local nonprofit organizations. Visit CoronadoARTS.com to download everything needed to apply for the open banner series. Find the documents under the Opportunities Menu on the website. The Discover Coronado grant funds the costs of production and installation of 30 sets of banners. The purpose of the program is to accentuate the city’s main thoroughfare, welcome citizens and visitors to Coronado’s main street, and to celebrate Coronado traditions including holidays, events and activities. The program is administered by the Coronado Cultural Arts Commission. The deadline for the January-March series is 5 p.m. on Sept. 15. For additional information, contact Kelly Purvis at [email protected] or (619) 522-2633.

More Library Programming

Film Forum Coronado: The Coronado Public Library, in partnership with the Coronado Island Film Festival, presents Film Forum Coronado, taking place on the first and third Wednesday of each month at the Library. Film expert Ralph de Lauro provides a brief introduction to each film and leads a discussion of the cinematography afterwards. On Wednesday, Sept. 15, De Lauro will discuss “The Lady from Shanghai” (1947, 87 Minutes) from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The film is a thriller by Orson Welles about a mischievous adventurer (Welles) who is bewitched by a blonde temptress (Rita Hayworth). The climax in the funhouse hall of mirrors is one of cinema’s most audacious and inventive sequences.
Tinker Tuesday: Kids can learn about aerodynamics and rockets by making a simple balloon rocket at the Library’s Tinker Tuesday on Sept. 14 from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. in Library Park. Join in on the fun either in person on the Library Lawn or by picking up a kit to complete the project at home. Video instructions will be posted on the Library's Facebook and YouTube pages at 3:30 p.m. Kits will be available starting at noon the day of the event at the Circulation Desk while supplies last.

Clean-up Art Project: Collect trash and data at the same time with a clean-up project that will meet at the Library entrance on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at 4 p.m. Emerald Keepers needs help collecting colorful trash for an art project and the Library will be teaching how to use the Marine Debris Tracker app to contribute research to a citizen science project while you clean the beach. Please bring your own mobile device for tracking. The Library has a limited number of trash pickers and buckets, so come early or bring your own.
College Admission Strategies: College admissions can be a complicated process and this year applicants have a different set of challenges to navigate due to COVID. Get all your questions answered by Greg Kaplan, college application strategist and author of “Earning Admission: Real Strategies for Getting into Highly Selective Colleges.” This presentation will focus on how to succeed in the application process after this challenging year. A Q&A period will be offered following the talk. Teens of all ages and their parents are invited to attend this virtual talk. Register at cplevents.org to receive the Zoom link to attend. The event will take place on Thursday, Sept. 16 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Autumn Concert Series: Join the Library for its Autumn Concert Series Fridays from Sept. 3 to Nov. 5. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. All performances will also be livestreamed on the Library’s Facebook Page. On Friday, Sept. 17, pianist John Gutheil will play a selection of classical music on the Library's Steinway Piano. Inspired by his participation in the 2016 Cliburn Amateur, Gutheil rededicated himself to the piano and has since won a gold medal at the Seattle amateur competition, and a special prize in San Diego. He has also recently performed at a festival in Russia. Check cplevents.org for a full listing of musicians and specific concert information. All concerts in this series are free to attend thanks to the sponsorship of the Friends of the Coronado Public Library.
