Three City facilities will offer fun activities for all ages on Friday, Oct. 29. All are encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes for the fun. Families are welcome to head over to Spreckels Park from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. to enjoy festive music, entertainment, trick-or-treating, and “Spooktacular” games. The John D. Spreckels Center will host a Halloween Bash for those 21 and up at 6 p.m. The cost for the Spreckels Center party is $13 for residents and $18 for nonresidents and includes hors d’oeuvres and refreshments. The Library will be showing Disney’s “Hocus Pocus” free on the lawn and will also have a spooky scavenger hunt from 6 to 8 p.m. For more information, call the Community Center at (619) 522-7342.
Vons to Begin Work on Expansion into Cora-Mart
Vons has received a building permit and will soon begin work on its expansion into the old Cora-Mart building, which will increase the store size by 5,500 square feet. The newly renovated store will offer a new fresh cut fruit department, frozen foods section and refrigerated cases, as well as upgrades to the deli, bakery, meat and seafood departments. Work also includes an expansion of the produce and dairy departments, and two new public restrooms on the shopping floor. The store will remain open for shopping during construction but may open late and close early. The building also will be enhanced with three murals along Orange Avenue depicting iconic scenes of the Coronado lifestyle. Work is estimated to take approximately five months to complete.
Coronado Gold Recipient of iCommute Diamond Award
The City of Coronado has once again been recognized during the Fiscal Year 2021 iCommute Diamond Awards as a Gold recipient. The San Diego Association of Governments’ iCommute program hosted a virtual awards presentation at noon on Tuesday, Sept. 21, to recognize the 144 Diamond Award Recipients. Award winners, including Coronado, made strides to develop and implement commuter programs that encourage their employees to use alternative commute choices, such as participating in promoting Bike Anywhere Week, conducting a bike education class for City staff, providing free commuter ferry service and offering a flexible work schedule to help accommodate commuters.
Coronado Ferry Service Update
The cost for a one-way ticket for Flagship Ferry service between San Diego and Coronado recently went from $5 to $7. The increase, which went into effective Sept. 18, was approved by the California Public Utilities Commission in August. It should be noted that the City continues to fund the fare-free Commuter Ferry service, provided by Flagship since 1993, to help reduce the number of cars on the road and impacts to the environment. Commuters ride free weekdays from 4:50 and 8:30 a.m. between the Coronado Ferry Landing and Broadway Pier. Morning commuters receive a return ticket to use that afternoon. The regular fare applies during non-commuter ferry hours. See the Coronado Commuter Ferry schedule by clicking below.
Electric Vehicle Charging Stations to be Upgraded

On Oct. 5, Blink Charging will upgrade the four existing electric vehicle charging stations in the City at no charge. The locations will be two EV chargers at City Hall, 1825 Strand Way, and two at Vernetti Stadium parking lot at B Avenue and Second Street. Blink is asking EV charging users to not charge their vehicle in these locations and to not park in the EV parking stalls on Oct. 5. City staff will post notices as a reminder.
Coronado Police Arrest Suspects in Armed Robbery Case
Coronado Police made an arrest on Monday, Sept. 20, following a call of an armed robbery near B Avenue and Second Street. The victim stated that he had arranged to meet two men to buy narcotics but was instead robbed at gun point. With a good description of the vehicle and direction of travel, officers found the suspects driving on the San Diego-Coronado Bridge and made a stop. Two men, ages 18 and 20, were taken into custody and charged with conspiracy and robbery. The 20-year-old also was charged with possession of a gun. A search of the vehicle found large amounts of cash, drugs and a non-serialized “ghost gun.”
Police Hold 'Walk Out' Ceremony for 2 Retiring Department Personnel
The Police Department and the City said goodbye to Capt. Jesus Ochoa and. Lt. Mitch McKay, both of whom are retiring after more than 30 years of dedicated service, each. Ochoa joined the Coronado Police Department as an intern in 1991. He became a reserve officer in June of 1992 and a full time police officer shortly thereafter. He was immediately recognized as a person with organizational skills, a commitment to the community and proficient with technology in a time when officers were not using computers on a daily basis. Capt. Ochoa was promoted to sergeant in 1997 and part of his duties included being a member of the Technology Committee. He helped develop a state-of-the-art CAD, AFR and Records Management System. These systems would serve the department for 23 years. He later graduated from the FBI National Academy Session No.197. He would go on to successfully promote to lieutenant and captain and work every assignment in the department. Thank you for your 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Coronado.

Lt. McKay has 31 years with the Coronado Police Department and currently serves as the Support Services Lieutenant overseeing Investigations, Training, Community Relations, and Professional Standards. His department assignments have included Reserve Officer, Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Detective, and Auto Theft Task Force Officer. In December 2004, he was promoted to Sergeant and was assigned to Patrol, Investigations and Administration. In September 2015, he was promoted to Lieutenant and assigned to Support Services. Lt. McKay has received numerous commendations, letters of appreciation, and awards for outstanding work including the San Diego Crime Stoppers Enough Is Enough Award, Mothers Against Drunk Driving Outstanding DUI Officer of the Year; and Vehicle Theft Recovery Officer of the Year. He also graduated the FBI National Academy session 257. Thank you for your dedicated service to the City of Coronado.

'Ride to Live' Program Held Last Week; More Planned
Public Services & Engineering Projects
Annual Traffic Count Program: The City contracts annually with a data collection company to set pneumatic tube counters at pre-selected locations throughout the City. These tube counters collect traffic data such as volume, vehicle classification and speed. The City uses this data to assess traffic patterns and to determine whether to install traffic controls such as yield and stop signs. The tube counters have been deployed over the past three weeks and data collection will be completed by the end of the month.
Country Club Infiltration Reduction: The contractor on the Country Club Infiltration Reduction project completed the lining and grouting work this week on the existing storm drain lines, manholes, and inlet structures. The work will reduce water infiltration into the system. Next week, crews will perform testing, which will complete the work.

First Street Utility Undergrounding: City representatives will visit properties along First Street during the week of Sept. 27 to assess the work necessary to convert each property’s overhead services to underground services. This will provide property owners with a more accurate estimate of the costs they would be required to cover as a result of participation in the proposed underground utility conversion. There are 43 properties that have been identified as currently having their utilities provided by overhead lines and the assessments should be completed in three to four working days.

Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade: Modification of the wet well on the Trinidad Pump Station Upgrade project was delayed due to a subcontractor’s inability to provide reliable pumps. The issue has been resolved and work to modify the wet well has begun. This work will entail removing the top portion of the wet well, constructing a circular concrete foundation around the modified well and setting a new manhole section. Phase II of the project is expected to take five weeks to complete.
Recreation & Golf Services Projects
Lighting Improvement Upgrades: The City began upgrading lighting this year to improve safety and security at the Coronado Golf Course, three tennis courts and Coronado Aquatics Center. Lighting at these locations has become inefficient, outdated and unreliable for evening activities. The Golf Course installation was completed in July and lighting installation for the three tennis court locations are scheduled as follows: Oct. 11-29, Coronado Tennis Center; Nov. 1-26, Robbin Adair Courts; Nov. 29-Dec. 10, Library Courts. Two courts may be closed at one time during the installation. Poles and hardware will be painted and repaired, new LED lighting fixtures will be installed, and the closed courts will be locked during the project. To find the most current information on these lighting projects please visit CommentCoronado.org.
Golf Course Fall Maintenance: The Coronado Municipal Golf Course will be closed for fall maintenance on Oct. 5 and 6. The driving range will be open from 6 a.m. to sunset and Feast and Fareway will remain open between the hours of 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Annual Palm Pruning: A reminder that the City’s contractor is pruning palms in parkways and parks throughout Coronado as part of an annual palm-pruning program. Palm fruiting and hanging fronds can occur simultaneously throughout town so the City must be diligent in its work to remove both. The contractor will begin work in the Cays and then will work on the east side of Orange Avenue. From there, the contractor will start work on the west side Orange Avenue and expects to finish by the end of January. “No Parking” signs may appear on short notice when the contractor has been able to get ahead of schedule. The City appreciates residents’ quick response in moving vehicles out of the contractor’s path so the work can be completed.
