A Message From DEED

It’s been an unprecedented week for the Minnesota economy. Below are three suggestions from DEED that will useful:

Spread Helpful Information
In a crisis, misinformation can spread quickly as people are thirsty for news and rumors spread fast. We need to counter that by letting people know exactly what’s going on, and what resources are available for help. Here are some links to share with the business and civic community:

  • If you’re a business or a worker who has general questions about how COVID-10 affects business, consult our COVID-19 Information page.

  • If you’re a business or a worker who has questions about how unemployment insurance works, consult our Unemployment Insurance FAQs.

  • If you’re going to apply for unemployment benefits, APPLY ONLINE. Phone lines are jammed and have long wait times. The URL is www.uimn.org.

And of course, the most important overall message is to  #StayHomeMN .

Tell Us How You Can Help
Our State Emergency Operations Center (SEOC) has set up an intake process for private sector offers to help during the COVID-19. Already we’re hearing a lot of offers for assistance to provide critical parts for emergency operations, additional masks, and other capital resources.

If you have an idea for the way your business can help government, please email: HSEM.ppp@state.mn.us

Coronavirus Aid Law
President Trump signed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act into law. The Act requires employers to provide paid leave for some employees related to the COVID-19 crisis, among other measures. Here are some important items to note relative to the Act:
  • Paid Sick Leave – The law requires 80 hours of paid sick leave for employees of companies of fewer than 500 employees (compensation caps also apply). Leave would be available for workers who:
  • Are or may be sick with COVID-19
  • Have to care for a family member with the illness
  • Have a child whose school or childcare facility has been closed (or whose childcare provider is unable to provide care due to illness)
  • Paid Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) – The Act would also require partially paid leave under FMLA when an employee is unable to work or work from home due to a school or childcare closure related to COVID-19. This benefit would be available to individuals who have worked for their employer for at least 30 days.
  • Benefits under the new law will expire on December 31, 2020.
