An Invitation this Lent: Join Us Wednesdays at Noon Online

In the Episcopal Church every three years we journey through the bible hearing stories about the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Season after season, beginning in Advent as we wait his birth, then in Epiphany and Lent, we hear familiar stories that we have come to know.

This Lent you are invited to join St. John’s Cathedral LA and The Rev. Dr. Maggi Dawn online for a weekly gathering as we reflect on her book, “Giving It Up,” which offer daily bible readings from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day. Every week Maggi will read a story, we will share thoughts and learnings, ponder a related question, and close in guided prayer or song. The biblical stories will be familiar, but how they relate to our lives will be fresh. Maggi writes:

A Lent Series

Hello! My name is Maggi Dawn, and I’m an Episcopal priest and professor of theology based in Providence, Rhode Island. One of my favorite ways of going deeper in faith is to re-read the stories of scripture, imagining myself right inside the story. I want to get beyond the dry theory to something that connects to real life; and I believe that before we ever get to principles and lessons and calls to action, we need a deep and personal connection to God. It is my pleasure to join you this Lent for a weekly online meeting, looking further into how to deepen that connection with God. Lent is always associated with “wilderness” — but this is an invitation to a journey through Lent that does not feel like a dry, dusty punishment, but instead like a deep dive into a God who longs to feed our souls. I hope you will join me as we pray, read, and talk together.

Maggi’s book is available on Amazon electronically via Kindle or in print, though shipping may take 7-10 days. For the first weekly gathering or two, simply join us to begin our journey through Lent. The zoom link will be available on the St. John’s website at: www.stjohnsla.org. We will meet on Wednesdays, beginning on February 25th at noon for one hour. Order your book now and enjoy.

We hope you will join St. John’s Cathedral online. Everyone is most welcome to journey with us through Lent this year.

The Weekly Update

The cathedral campus will be closed February 16 for President's Day.

Canon Earl Mounger is inviting anyone interested in helping distribute postcards for this event to stop by the quilt table in the back of the church this Sunday.

Black History Month at St. John's Cathedral

Written by Cn. Earl Mounger

SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

The time has once again come for our annual celebration of Black History Month. It seems like only a week ago that I penned an article about our plans for February last year.

This year’s theme is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” as set forth by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The observance was originally founded by Carter G. Woodson, the “father of Black History.” Woodson’s mission was to share and preserve the particular contributions of Black culture. In 1926 he launched the first Negro History Week, and fifty years later President Gerald Ford officially expanded it to a month in 1976. Read more.

Add your name to the Altar Quilt

Now through the end of February

The original altar quilt was done in 2010. It combines two types of African American quilts: applique and embroidery quilts. The goal then, as now, was much like that of early African American quilters, to tell the history of diversity and community here at St. John's. We come from across the country and the world. Each panel has four components to help tell your story: your place of birth, the year you became an affiliate or member, your name, and one or two activities you are or have been involved with here at St John's. You're invited you to add your name to our shared community history here at St. John's. Each Sunday for the next month there will be someone at a table to assist you. You may choose from the precut colors and follow the instructions to add your name. The cost for each panel is $42.00. If you have moved and would like to add your name, contact the church office for information. Download Your Order Form Here

Shrove Tuesday

Please join us on Shrove Tuesday. Vestry members will be on hand to make and serve pancakes (a great get-to-know-you opportunity) for a delicious supper at 5.30 p.m. prior to the burning of palms and a simple service at 7.00 p.m. We hope to see you. You are most welcome to help prepare or serve dinner, or simply enjoy an evening together.

Ash Wednesday

Wednesday, February 18

7.00 a.m., 12.00 p.m., 7.00 p.m.

The first Christians observed with great devotion the days of our Lord’s passion and resurrection, and it became the custom of the Church to prepare for them by a season of penitence and fasting (BCP 264-65).

You are invited, in the name of the Church, to observe a holy Lent. St. John’s Cathedral will offer services at 7am, 12pm and 7pm, and Ashes to Go throughout the day. The 7am service will be a simple service of prayer, confession and ashes. The 12pm service will include a sermon and Holy Eucharist, and 7pm service will include a sermon, Holy Eucharist and music.
