Learn More about Sacred Resistance
Following the 2024 General Election, with its threats of mass deportations, attacks on transgender communities, and elimination of reproductive healthcare access, the Sacred Resistance Task Force "rebooted" for the work ahead. Sacred Resistance 2.0 was launched in December 2024 with renewed energy and expanded leadership.
Sacred Resistance 2.0 represents both an evolution and an expansion of the original mission. The new landscape demands a broader coalition capable of defending multiple fronts simultaneously. The "2.0" designation reflects the commitment to building more robust infrastructure, deepening community partnerships, and developing rapid-response capabilities that can adapt to an increasingly volatile political environment. Lenten Book Study with Maggi Dawn
starting Wednesday, February 25
12.00 p.m.
St. John's Cathedral invites all to share in a weekly online noontime Lenten series with the Rev. Dr. Maggi Dawn offering reflections on her book, “Giving It Up,” which offers daily Bible readings from Ash Wednesday to Easter Day.
Dawn is canon theologian for the Diocese of Rhode Island, a former assistant dean at Yale Divinity School, and wife of the Very Rev. Andrew Tremlett, dean of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. She is also an indie rock musician and songwriter. (Tremlett and Dawn visited L.A.'s St. John's Cathedral, where they are pictured with the Very Rev. Anne Sawyer, interim dean and priest-in-charge) on Feb. 6.
Each week Dawn will read a story, and participants will share thoughts and learnings, ponder a related question, and close in guided prayer or song. The biblical stories will be familiar, but how they relate to our lives will be fresh.
Dawn writes: "One of my favorite ways of going deeper in faith is to re-read the stories of scripture, imagining myself right inside the story. I want to get beyond the dry theory to something that connects to real life; and I believe that before we ever get to principles and lessons and calls to action, we need a deep and personal connection to God. It is my pleasure to join you this Lent for a weekly online meeting, looking further into how to deepen that connection with God. Lent is always associated with “wilderness” — but this is an invitation to a journey through Lent that does not feel like a dry, dusty punishment, but instead like a deep dive into a God who longs to feed our souls. I hope you will join me as we pray, read, and talk together."
Dawn’s book is available on Amazon electronically via Kindle or in print, though shipping may take 7-10 days. The zoom link will be available on the St. John’s website at: www.stjohnsla.org. The group will meet on Wednesdays, beginning on Feb. 25 at noon for one hour.

Black History Month at St. John's Cathedral
Written by Cn. Earl Mounger
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
The time has once again come for our annual celebration of Black History Month. It seems like only a week ago that I penned an article about our plans for February last year.
This year’s theme is “A Century of Black History Commemorations,” as set forth by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History. The observance was originally founded by Carter G. Woodson, the “father of Black History.” Woodson’s mission was to share and preserve the particular contributions of Black culture. In 1926 he launched the first Negro History Week, and fifty years later President Gerald Ford officially expanded it to a month in 1976. Read more.

Add your name to the Altar Quilt
Last Chance on Sunday!
The original altar quilt was done in 2010. It combines two types of African American quilts: applique and embroidery quilts. The goal then, as now, was much like that of early African American quilters, to tell the history of diversity and community here at St. John's. We come from across the country and the world. Each panel has four components to help tell your story: your place of birth, the year you became an affiliate or member, your name, and one or two activities you are or have been involved with here at St John's. You're invited you to add your name to our shared community history here at St. John's. There will be someone at a table to assist you on Sunday. You may choose from the precut colors and follow the instructions to add your name. The cost for each panel is $42.00. If you have moved and would like to add your name, contact the church office for information. Download Your Order Form Here

Join Stagebound, Inc and Karen Parks for an immersive, multi-artist journey into the heart of American music and history. Decolonized: The Matriarchs celebrates the profound legacy of Black and Native American women—the original architects of our cultural landscape. Through a powerful blend of live performance, archival visuals, and historical storytelling, this "performance-lecture" examines how Indigenous and Black artistry has been influenced, misappropriated, and ultimately reclaimed. This isn't just a concert; it is a cultural masterclass designed to challenge, inspire, and honor the matriarchs who paved the way.
