Members are encouraged to host coffee hour on a Sunday in the month of their birthday by getting in touch with the Rev. Mel Soriano and using the sign-up sheet in the courtyard.

February is just around the corner which means planning for St. John's Black History Celebration is underway. Black History Month is a great opportunity to foster inclusivity, celebrate diversity, and recognize the contributions of Black individuals to history, culture, and society.

Vestry Nominations

From the Senior Warden: "Vestry Nominations are open for three year terms. Please let me know of your desire to be on the vestry ASAP. We have a great deal of work to do so know that you are committing to attending meetings and doing the work that has to be done as we move forward collectively."


Nominees to the vestry must be active, pledging members in good standing of a least one year at St. John's Cathedral.

Children, Youth, and Family Meeting

Sunday, January 11

Families will gather in the parish office for a conversation about children, youth, and family life at St. John's Cathedral. Participants will focus on actively listening to one another. Parents, clergy, and other parishioners will share their hopes, experiences, and needs as we reflect on how we support a diverse, intergenerational, and faithful community. This gathering will help shape future, more focused conversations.


Food Pantry Distribution

Saturday, January 17

8.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m.


The congregation supports the community by providing fresh produce, canned and frozen goods to families in need. Volunteers will continue serving as supplies last. St. John's partners with the LA Food Bank, Seeds of Hope, and people like you to make this vital ministry possible.

Celebrating MLK

Sunday, January 18

4.00 p.m.


The Program Group on Black Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians invite all in the diocese to attend a service celebrating the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Christ the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 3303 W. Vernon Ave., Los Angeles. Preacher will be the Rev. Melanie Mullen, The Episcopal Church’s director of reconciliation, justice, and creation care. A Creole gumbo dinner will follow the service.

Episcopal leaders respond to U.S. attack on Venezuela, president’s capture


[Episcopal News Service] Following last weekend’s U.S. military attack on Venezuela and the removal of President Nicholás Maduro from office, Episcopal leaders have released statements calling for prayers and peace in the South American country. They expressed both support for Venezuelans celebrating Maduro’s removal and concern over the legality of the attack. 


“The Episcopal Church’s General Convention has a long-standing policy that ‘condemn[s] in any nation the first use of armed force in the form of a preventive or pre-emptive strike that is aimed at disrupting a non-imminent, uncertain military threat,’” The Episcopal Church said in a Jan. 3 Action Alert released by the Episcopal Public Policy Network. “Even as we recognize that intervention in sovereign states can sometimes be necessary to prevent atrocities, we discourage ‘the abuse of this norm to rationalize military actions in sovereign states for political ends.’”

Campus Closure

The cathedral campus will be closed in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Normal operating hours will resume on January 20.
