The cathedral will celebrate one service of Holy Eucharist this Sunday and the contributions of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to the cause of true freedom. The sermon will be delivered by the Rev. Melanie Mullen, The Episcopal Church’s director of reconciliation, justice, and creation care. Many thanks to The Program Group on Black Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians for inviting her to Los Angeles this weekend.

February is just around the corner which means planning for St. John's Black History Celebration is underway. Black History Month is a powerful time to advance social justice, commit to learning and self-reflection, reckon honestly with the church’s legacy of racism, uplift and empower African American members, and stand in visible solidarity with the broader Black community.

Food Pantry Distribution

The congregation supports the community by providing fresh produce, canned and frozen goods to families in need. Volunteers will continue serving as supplies last. St. John's partners with the LA Food Bank, Seeds of Hope, and people like you to make this vital ministry possible.

The Program Group on Black Ministries of the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles and the H. Belfield Hannibal Chapter of the Union of Black Episcopalians invite all in the diocese to attend a service celebrating the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at Christ the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, 3303 W. Vernon Ave., Los Angeles. Preacher will be the Rev. Melanie Mullen. A Creole gumbo dinner will follow the service. The Diocese of Los Angeles is located in one of the most ethnically diverse geographic areas in the nation and takes seriously the call to seek and serve Christ in all persons. Members of the congregation should plan to attend a gathering after 10.00 a.m. Holy Eucharist to hear from prospective vestry candidates up for vote and an overview of the proposed budget for 2026. Members of the clergy will be on hand to discuss details and answer any questions.

Thousands join Episcopal Church vigil to lament violent immigration enforcement actions, unite in pursuing justice


[Episcopal News Service] Episcopalians and faith partners gathered virtually January 13 for an evening prayer vigil to mourn, lament and remember people who have died by immigration enforcement actions in and out of detention. The Episcopal Church in Minnesota and The Episcopal Church’s public policy, partnership and witness division co-hosted the vigil via Zoom in response to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s ongoing, often violent enforcement actions in the Twin Cities area.

Episcopal leaders respond to U.S. attack on Venezuela, president’s capture


[Episcopal News Service] Following last weekend’s U.S. military attack on Venezuela and the removal of President Nicholás Maduro from office, Episcopal leaders have released statements calling for prayers and peace in the South American country. They expressed both support for Venezuelans celebrating Maduro’s removal and concern over the legality of the attack. 


“The Episcopal Church’s General Convention has a long-standing policy that ‘condemn[s] in any nation the first use of armed force in the form of a preventive or pre-emptive strike that is aimed at disrupting a non-imminent, uncertain military threat,’” The Episcopal Church said in a Jan. 3 Action Alert released by the Episcopal Public Policy Network. “Even as we recognize that intervention in sovereign states can sometimes be necessary to prevent atrocities, we discourage ‘the abuse of this norm to rationalize military actions in sovereign states for political ends.’”
