Being a Sanctuary Diocese

From The Rt. Rev. John Harvey Taylor

As reports come in about ICE raids around the Episcopal Diocese of Los Angeles, I write to remind my siblings in Christ that, by act of diocesan convention in December 2016, we are a sanctuary diocese.

“Sanctuary” is generally but not exclusively understood as sheltering immigrant workers and their families in churches. I’m not aware of any of our 133 missions and parishes which currently do so. This doesn’t rule it out if circumstances warrant. We look forward to joining with colleagues in the ecumenical and interfaith community in mounting legal challenges if the current administration follows through on its stated intention to violate the sanctity of churches and other places of worship when they shelter those fleeing unjust power.

USC Alumni Day of SCervice

Saturday, March 22

10.00 a.m. - 12.00 p.m.

Join us for the second annual St. John’s Episcopal Cathedral Beautification project. This project is part of USC’s annual Alumni Day of SCervice, which brings alumni worldwide together for a common day of service for their communities. You do not have to be affiliated with USC to participate, but you do need to register by March 12 to receive a button for the event. Follow this link to the registration page.

This year we will be doing light cleaning & organizing, indoor painting, gardening (weather permitting), & filling Easter Eggs. If you be joining us, please wear clothes that you do not mind getting dirty or giving new color to in the way of paint stains! If you have gardening gloves or thick work gloves, bringing them would be appreciated.

If you have any questions or need assistance registering, please see Heather Kelly after Holy Eucharist or reach out to the Rev. Mel so he can put you in contact with her.

Who will win the Golden Halo?

If you’ve not heard about Lent Madness…it’s sort of like March Madness, but instead of basketball it’s about saints and their stories. A member of the parish, Gloria Flowers, recently shared with the Rev. Mel that she’s a fan – perhaps you will be too! By the time Holy Week comes along, you’ll see how God works in the lives of ordinary people to shine the light of Christ’s love in a world in need of hope.

Purchase your own full size Lent Madness bracket poster from Forward Movement.

Sign up in the cathedral courtyard!

If your birthday is in March, please use the sign-up sheets on the bulletin board in the fountain courtyard or contact the Rev. Mel Soriano to sponsor coffee hour. Whether it’s cookies, fruit, or something homemade or heartier, your contribution will help make our time of fellowship even more joyful.

Thank you for sharing your special month with the community—we can’t wait to celebrate together!
