Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

Come early, and give twice this Sunday in thanks for all the blessings of life this Thanksgiving. Please consider the gift of an offering and a pledge of your support to St. John’s Cathedral for 2025. Your support matters greatly. Giving makes you an active member by sharing in the expense of caring and operating this church, which takes all of us; and by sharing what has been given to us by God. There is Good News to be shared as we begin a second century in this beautiful church home.

I am pleased to report that Sunday giving to the plate and pledging are up, as is our rental income from the use of our sanctuary and parking lot. Numbers are actually at a glorious high in comparison to the past five years; but rental income from property and film shoots have yet to return. As a result, there is a gap between income and expenses, and your pledges for next year will determine what we can spend. You may also recall that we began this year by working to grow our budget to what it has been in the past, and you’ve done a terrific job. We are getting closer to what it takes to support this cathedral home each and every week.

We know that it’s been a difficult year financially for some members of our parish, while other parishioners have been able to give generously. This is one of the many blessings of community when we work together. If you find yourself somewhere in between, please give as much as you can, and honor your pledge if possible. Whatever help you are able to give will be appreciated, and will help this community of faith to grow strong. This cathedral community is important to all of us, and we give thanks for your presence among us, ministries and love.

On the 1st of December please join us at 4pm for a glorious service of Lessons & Carols with a festive reception to follow. Come, bask in the beauty of sacred choral music and hear ancient readings that transcend time. Bask in the candlelight, the light of Christ, lighting the way, and the love of this beloved community of faith. Together let us celebrate this our centennial year by giving thanks to God and with a thankful heart.

May God bless you this Thanksgiving and always.

Centennial Celebration: Lessons and Carols

Sunday, December 1 (NEXT WEEK)

4.00 p.m.

St. John’s Cathedral invites all in the diocese to an Advent lessons and carols service set for 4 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1, to mark the 100th anniversary of the opening of the landmark church sanctuary at 514 W. Adams Blvd., Los Angeles. Festive reception to follow. Additional parking available.

Bishop John Harvey Taylor will join the Very Rev. Anne Sawyer, interim dean and priest-in-charge, in officiating at the service with the choir of St. John’s led by Christopher Gravis, Canon for Music Ministry and Cathedral Arts.

“St. John’s opens our doors wide to welcome congregations, diocesan program groups, and visitors to gather in this sacred space,” Sawyer said. “We seek to deepen our relationships with people throughout the diocese.”

To assist with arrangements, those planning to attend the anniversary service are asked to RSVP HERE. Those arriving via the Metro E-Line – which runs from Santa Monica to East Los Angeles – should exit at the LATTC/Ortho Institute Station one half-block northeast of the cathedral.

“This year’s Advent service will launch a multi-year celebration of the many faces of St. John’s in the last 100 years,” said Rick Nordin, who joins fellow vestry member Arcadio Morales and the Rev. Margaret Hudley McCauley in co-chairing the centennial committee. “This includes building new housing on church property plus restoration and repairs to the historic cathedral.”

Designed in the Romanesque Revival style by architect brothers Pierpont and Walter Davis, St. John’s was opened as a parish church on Dec. 21, 1924, by then-rector George Davidson and consecrated Feb. 3, 1925, by Bishop Joseph Johnson. The church was named the Diocesan pro-cathedral in 2007 by Bishop J. Jon Bruno.
