Interim Dean and Priest-in-Charge's Note

Last Sunday was a lovely festive day at St. John’s Cathedral for our Ministry Fair.

What made my heart sing was the sight of faithful members engaged in lively conversations with new and old friends sharing stories of ministry. Many thanks to everyone who stayed after church at 8am and 10am to participate in this celebration. We had twenty-one ministries represented by parish members, and numerous people expressed interest in getting involved. There were even new members wanting to dive right into leadership positions, which is a fabulous sign for the bright and exciting future of St. John’s Cathedral.

When we remember that the Church is the community of the New Covenant,

which is a new relationship with God and each other through Jesus Christ, we realize that the people who gather on Sunday are the body of Christ in this world today. Deacon Margaret would say, thank you for being the hands, feet, eyes, ears, voice and heart of Jesus. Thank you for giving of your time and many gifts to serve this community, and may we always be mindful and give with grateful hearts to those we meet along the way.

This Sunday we will celebrate St. Francis with the Blessing of Animals at the 10am service. Please bring your beloved pets to church. We ask that you keep them on a leash or in a crate to keep everyone safe. The service will be held outside in front of the church, so wear hats, sunscreen and sunglasses for this joyful service of God’s creation.

Then at 4pm Sunday, return to hear the St. John’s Cathedral Festival Chorus for a performance titled, “Let All the World in Every Corner Sing!” Under the direction of Dr. Christopher Gravis, Canon for Music Ministry and Cathedral Arts, with the Laós Chamber Orchestra, this choral festival will feature music composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Gustav Holst. Laós Chamber Orchestra is directed by Dustin Seo, a California Arts Council Individual Artist Fellow. Tickets are available online in advance for $20, or at the door for $25. A reception will follow.

At 8pm in the Cathedral, Compline returns as we offer prayers at the end of a long day.

Please join us and our community as we live fully into the beauty of creation through love, laughter, song and prayer, thanks be to God. I hope to see you there.

Much love and blessings,

Anne+

Devastation from Hurricane Helene

Hurricane Helene devastated Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina last week. A dear friend of mine, whose father is the vicar of a Hispanic/Latino missionary congregation in Durham, NC, called me the day after the storm passed through North Carolina. Their parish was 80% flooded, and the parish hall, offices, and sanctuary parts were damaged. All of their electronic devices, furniture, and books were destroyed. El Buen Pastor is a missionary congregation with limited funds, and most of those funds will be dedicated to cleanup and restoring services such as heating and air conditioning. Vicar Ricardo Medina has asked me to forward a request for donations from our cathedral and the wider diocesan community. El Buen Pastor is one of the few churches that cater to the growing Hispanic/Latino community of the state and the growing Hispanic Episcopalians across the Diocese of North Carolina. Donations can be made by check or money order mailed to Iglesia El Buen Pastor/Good Shepherd Church 1852 Liberty St. Durham, NC 27703 (with a memo of "Recovery/Recuperacion"), or the North Carolina Diocese 4800 Six Forks Road, Suite 300 Raleigh, NC 27609, with a memo: "El Buen Pastor Durham, recovery." Any help is welcomed, and Father Medina would be eternally grateful for your help to his congregation.

Further west in the Diocese of Western North Carolina: The Kanuga Retreat Center and Cathedral of All Souls were also affected especially the Cathedral which spent around two days partially submerged, donations for that recovery can be made directly through Episcopal Relief and Development online which is also helping communities across the Deep South that were affected by Hurricane Helene.

I am thankful for any help that any of you can provide. If you would like to speak with me about separately helping them speak with me after Sunday's services respectively.

Peace,

Heyden Morales-Santiago
