Suggested Routes: Below we provide a handful of suggestions for safe locations to do 13.1 miles, 5k, or a one-mile. We're grateful to those who suggested routes via our recent survey. For safety reasons, we are NOT suggesting routes that include city or county roadways. Indeed, please note that we do NOT encourage you to do the course we use for the race. On traditional race weekends, those urban streets are closed, with barricading, police presence, and first-responders on hand. But that won't be the case in 2020, so for public safety we encourage you to avoid street running and stay to safer locations. You can see some proposed routes below on the Chuck Huckelberry Loop and elsewhere.

OK -- we'll send more pre-event information next week, but if you have questions send 'em to [email protected].

Possible Routes for TMC Get Moving Tucson Half Marathon
Here are possible locations you can run or walk on The Loop. Please remember that these suggestions are NOT measured, and that The Loop is open to pedestrians, bicyclists, chair athletes, and horses. These descriptions are best guesses for the 13.1 mile distance, but you can modify any of them to any other distance, including the standard 5k distance.

CENTRAL
Start at St Phillips and head on the north side of the river to just past Dan Felix memorial Park, near Camino de la Tierra -- then turn around and return.

Start at George Mehl Family Foothills Park at River Road, head west to Dodge, south to the south bank, then take the south side to approximately Kolb -- turn around and return.

WEST
Start at Christopher Columbus and head north, cross the river at Sunset, then take the east side south to St. Mary's, cross back to the west side, and return to Christopher Columbus.

Start at the Mercado, at Congress and the Santa Cruz: take the River Path south to Valencia, then turn around and return.

EAST
Start at Udall Park and take east side path south to Sellarole, then return.

SOUTH
Start at Sam Lena Park, head southwest and under I-10, then head southeast on Julian Wash to Thomas Jay Park, then turn around.

SOUTH EAST
Start at the Fantasy Island parking lot on Valencia and take the Loop north for 3 miles to Irvington, turn around -- do that twice, or continue south to about a mile east of Roy Schooner Trailhead.

SAGUARO EAST CHALLENGE
Start at the fee station and head clockwise on the Cactus Forest loop road for one full loop, then continue on the loop for a second time for approximately 2.4 miles, then head south (right) onto the Cactus Forest trail. Take this trail south until it intersects with the Cactus Forest Loop road -- that will be almost exactly 13.1 mile miles. If you then turn right, you'll have about a mile before you finish at the Visitor Center.
NOTE: very hilly, with some technical trails
TMC Get Moving Tucson: Fully Virtual
October 25, 2020: Fully Virtual

All registrants will receive these items:
  • a long-sleeve race shirt
  • souvenir race number
  • a commemorative circular coaster medallion, highlighting both the TMC Get Moving event and the 2020 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown
  • a $10 discount to either the Grand Canyon Trail 5k or half-marathon up in Tusayan. Coupon code: TMCGetMovingDiscount.
Based on a range of factors, we have decided to make the 2020 edition of the TMC Get Moving Tucson a Virtual Event.

As a virtual event, you can complete any of these distances by running or walking in any location you wish:
  • Cox Charities One Mile
  • Tucson Lifestyle 5k
  • TMC Get Moving Tucson Half Marathon

As with our recent Virtual events, we will mail the race goodies to out-of-town folks while holding packet pick-up in Tucson on race weekend.

All Virtual Finishers will be eligible for raffle prizes from The Running Shop and Run Tucson.

This is the third and final event of the 2020 Gabe Zimmerman Triple Crown, raising funds for local organizations, including over $5,000 for the BEYOND-Tucson Foundation, over $3,000 for Team Hoyt Arizona chair athletes, and at least $1,000 for the Southern Arizona Roadrunners.
Why are we doing the Grand Canyon race in person but not TMC GMT?
1) As we've said before, we cannot receive permits for our traditional race routes. Although other races in Tucson have been taking place, we have not found a safe alternative space suitable for the number of TMC Get Moving runners already registered. However, the Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon is a loop course on wide forested dirt roads and trails, with plenty of room for passing and plenty of room for social distancing.
2) With a cap of fewer participants, the Grand Canyon Half is a much smaller scale event to produce than the TMC Get Moving Tucson event and therefore a safer overall event.
3) Pima County is in the midst of a spike of COVID-19 cases and all indications are that we will have increased public health risks over coming weeks. In contrast, the remote location of the race in Coconino County does not present the same concern to regional officials that a race here in Tucson does. Indeed, the Town of Tusayan is a nationally-recognized tourist destination and they have been following best practices for public health concerns. This event has the ability to positively impact their community, while providing what seems to be an appropriate level of public health safety.
4) As a family-operated small business, we at Run Tucson take both individual and public health very seriously. Ultimately, we believe that we can produce a safe event in the Kaibab National Forest in ways that we cannot replicate here in Pima County.

All TMC Get Moving Tucson registrants receive a discount to the Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon. To take $10 off either the 5k or the half marathon, enter TMCGetMovingDiscount when registering online here.
Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon & 5k: In-Person
November 7, 2020: 5k & Half Marathon In Person, with Virtual Option
The first 200 registrants in either the 5k or the half-marathon will receive a these goodies:
  • Grand Canyon running buff
  • Colorful long sleeve shirt
  • Souvenir race coster medal
  • Souvenir race bib
We've decided to move forward with planning an in-person Grand Canyon Trail Half Marathon and 5k Run/Walk on Saturday, November 7th.

We've been given permission from all required entities to produce a staggered-start, socially-distant race, with a largely self-supported route and limited pre- and post-race activities.

In consultation with the Town of Tusayan, the Tusayan Chamber of Commerce, the Tusayan Fire Department, and the Kaibab National Forest, we think this is a safe option for runners and walkers who want to visit Northern Arizona.
The 13.1 mile trail loops through the beautiful forest and high desert of the Kaibab National Forest and is a great location for a socially distanced event.

The race registration site has details on safety protocols and more information will be available shortly.

Any registrant who wishes to do the event as a Virtual Event will receive their race goodies mailed directly to them.

Below are images of the coaster medallion and the give-away face coverings. We're still designing the souvenir race shirt . . . .
