October 14, 2018 - Proper 23
In Earnest
In every Search Process there comes a period when the Vestry and Search Committee are working extra hard putting in many hours. This is a labor of love, but it is also labor intensive. That’s where we are now. Extra prayers are needed as we are Preparing the Way for a new day in the life of All Saints. Please respect the confidential nature of what these two bodies are doing on your behalf and know that they are doing all they can to choose the right priest, a person of God’s own choosing.

I have been thinking a lot about how we can celebrate the day that gives our beloved parish its name. I have come to a somewhat different conclusion than what I shared last week. I apologize for the confusion I may have caused. I want to celebrate All Saints Day proper (Thursday, November 1) with a Eucharist at 10:00 a.m. It is at that service where we will read aloud the names of those saints who have died since last All Saints Day. Please call the office at (407) 647-3413 with names you wish to make sure we remember. We will sing the great hymns of All Saints, remembering, as Deacon Liz recently reminded a gathering, that it will get a “little crowded” as our voices “will be joined by Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven”. On All Saints Sunday, (November 4) you will have an opportunity to pray aloud for those dear friends and cherished family members whose names were read on November 1, or any other names you wish to remember.

Now I know some will be happy with the timing of the service and some will find it difficult or impossible to attend. It tugs at my heart to know that I cannot please everyone in everything. I simply want us to celebrate all the saints with an All Saints Day service. I’d like to think you will support this if you can. A part of me wants to offer a special incentive, like a special ribbon or medallion, but I’ll resist the gimmicks and appeal to your better side. Come if you can!

I am so thrilled to repeat my Sunday announcement about the deficit reduction effort. We have received a $10,000 challenge gift from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. Since that announcement we have received additional gifts totaling $3,000, bringing our total to $66,400. Want to compete for the honor of giving that last gift to bring us to $70,000 and beyond? Thanks to those who have given to this campaign, Preparing the Way  for our next Rector!  We have so many deeply committed parishioners, for which I give thanks.

October is the month for thinking about stewardship (not that the topic is ever far from our everyday lives.) It is imperative that we enter the new year with zero deficit and with adequate funding for the new year.  Your stewardship committee has been working hard to drive this message home and you have been seeing signs of their work. Let me set out these basic parameters of what is yet to come:
  • We will hear briefly from members of the parish about the adventure in giving that they have known in their own lives.
  • On or soon after October 25, you will receive by mail a letter and a pledge card inviting you to pray about your financial commitment to All Saints for 2019.
  • On November 4, you will be asked to return your pledge card and lay it on the altar during our worship services.
This is not primarily a fund-raising activity, although we all know that raising money in support of our church is essential. But this is also much more than that. It is an act of worship. I will be thinking with you about that adventure in giving in my own life and in our married life. If I thought it was simply about finding the money to pay the electric bill and salaries I would hang it up!

Our Blessing of the Animals went well. It is the only time I have done this when we had only dogs! Don’t know what that says about us! 😊 And don’t forget that on Sunday, October 21 we will honor all medical professionals.

Finally, the Altar Guild needs help. This wonderful group of men and women make our worship services happen. They are a steady presence, mostly unseen, but so important to All Saints. For a variety of reasons, they are shorthanded right now. Would you consider becoming a member?  Please contact any one of the clergy or co-directors, Larry Standish (407) 793-4650 or Florence Smith (407) 619-3211 for more information.

Lots to pray about. Lots to celebrate. Thank you for letting me be part of the journey.

Sundays Music
The Canterbury Choir will sing Bless the Lord, O My Soul  by Jane Marshall at the 9:00 a.m. service. The St. Gregory Choir will sing I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes  by Leo Sowerby and Purest and Highest  by Charles Villiers Stanford at the 11:15 a.m. service.

ANTHEM STORY - I WILL LIFT UP MINE EYES
Leo Sowerby’s extraordinary talents as an organist and composer are on full display in this Sunday’s choir anthem, “I Will Lift Up Mine Eyes.” An early work, this moving setting of Psalm 121 is a tiny sliver from Sowerby’s output of nearly 500 pieces for choir, organ, harp, piano, orchestra and jazz band. A leading light of Anglican music in America, Sowerby (1895-1968) is best known as organist/choirmaster at St. James Cathedral in Chicago (1927-1962). After retiring, he was called to the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., as founding director of the College of Church Musicians. He is buried at the cathedral.
