End of Course & End of Grade TESTING: It matters more than you may know
Tips to Prepare your Child

Regardless of how any one of us may feel about the requirements of North Carolina's standardized testing, they provide measurements of student achievement and a school's academic growth.
They also provide comparison data between school districts across the state.
Clearly, these tests are only ONE measurement of student achievement. Our local benchmarks, including NC Check-Ins, class tests and projects, and other forms of assessment also measure student achievement.
How Can Parents Prepare Children for these High Stake Tests?
Having strong reading skills is not only important in all areas of intellectual development, it factors heavily in these tests. Thus, any regular encouragement by families to have children read on a regular basis is quite beneficial. This can be books, magazines, newspapers, or even comic books if it fosters more regular reading!
If a child reads each day for at least 20-30 minutes, this bolsters an ability to read the lengthy passages often found on the EOG reading exams.
In addition to reading each day, helping children develop critical thinking skills is also important for test-taking. Taking time to discuss what a child has read, and allowing them to share their ideas or voice their opinions about their reading helps stimulate critical thinking. Reading is essential for all areas of academics including science, and math EOGs.
In the days and weeks ahead, encourage your children to put down the electronics and sit down to read!

Continuing our Dedication to Expanded Outdoor Education
Our Outdoor Education Program is expanding. Our first greenhouse is coming together. Our staff worked together to get the first parts of the greenhouse constructed.
With good weather in the forecast, we hope to get it completed by the end of the week.
Elementary Teacher: Kate Levea-Lattimore
Now in her 10th year at LLCA as an educator, Mrs. Kate Levea-Lattimore teaches 4th-grade math and science. In previous years, she has taught all subjects of 5th-grade and 6th-grade science.
When asked what she loves most about teaching at LLCA, she said, "I love that LLCA is a close-knit K-12 school because it is so amazing to see the students that I had in 4th grade move up and be successful through the years. Now I am seeing some of my first students graduate from high school and I am so proud to see all the great things they've done in their time at LLCA."
Her favorite aspect of being a teacher is, "imprinting a positive, caring attitude, and a love of learning on the students' hearts."
Her piece of advice to students: Be a lifelong learner. Life is a learning process.
Fun Fact: Before her time at LLCA, Mrs. LL worked an internship at Stanford University. She was a research assistant on a project that examined children with Fragile X Syndrome, a rare genetic condition.
What's up in her classroom: In science, students are having fun learning about animal adaptations. They are researching an animal that they have never heard of to discover what their special adaptations are for surviving in their environment. Our partners with Mountain Roots Outdoor Ed have enhanced their knowledge of animal adaptations.
In Math, students are delving into the world of fractions. Students have used manipulatives to help understand fractions' equivalence, addition, and subtraction of fractions, and much more!
Our Little Raptors Check out Our Big Raptors
Students from Mr. High and Mrs. Massey’s class enjoyed a walk down to the baseball field to view a rocket launch demonstration by our high school science club that Mr. Jeff Edwards sponsors. He serves as our high school Math 3, Physics, and Physical Science teacher.
Middle Schoolers Learning about Latin America
Our 6th graders have been working hard on the unit, “Independence for Latin America.” They were introduced to Simon Bolivar. He and other revolutionaries spent their lives dedicated to liberating many of the Latin American countries of Spanish rule. Venezuela was his homeland and he worked tirelessly to liberate them from Spain’s rule and unfair inequities of the population, especially the poor and underprivileged indigenous peoples who were not allowed to own land. We also created a Mexican mural in the tradition of Diego Rivera depicting scenes of Mexico’s revolution for independence from Spain. Miguel Hidalgo played a key role to start, but it would take 100 years to get there.
Student Leaders in the Making
These amazing students demonstrated leadership and communication skills this week by helping out with morning announcements.
They shared fun facts about history, gave athletic updates, encouraged students to clean up the school campus, and showed appreciation for their amazing teachers.
Coming Soon, LLCA's First-Ever Literary Magazine Produced By Students!

The staff of our LLCA literary magazine worked tirelessly to create the first-ever literary and arts magazine by our high school students.
The students picked up many skills: advertising, letter writing, fundraising, design, and creating criteria for judging submissions.
LLCA students made 74 submissions, and the magazine staff had to make tough choices about what made the cut. The end result, our first literary magazine, Between the Lines, will be published soon. We are very proud of Ms. Askins and her literary magazine students, and we look forward to reading their production in the coming weeks!
