Raise Your Voice: Everyday Leadership for Change Makers

Dear St. Lukers,

Over the last few weeks in worship, we’ve been exploring what it means to be Change Makers, people who “live the rhythm” of learning, living, loving, and leading in ways that make a difference. But if the word leadership feels intimidating to you, you’re not alone. Many assume leadership is reserved for people with certain titles, skills, or personalities.

Chances are, somewhere in your journey - either as a professional or as you have explored the self-help section of a bookstore - you’ve encountered article after article or book after book about what “leadership” is, and how you can be the best “leader.” Adaptive leadership, servant leadership, charismatic leadership: the list goes on, with model after model emerging, each writer having discovered something new that will unlock the keys to your potential.

But before those “new” models, leadership was thought of much differently: it wasn’t about seeing and developing the potential in every person but discerning who among us was actually designed for leadership. A prominent concept was known as the “Great Man” theory – that among us there were leaders, born with the right traits to lead. The quest for leaders was about finding the man (and of course, it was always a man) destined for greatness. There was even a belief that there was a particular bone structure, ear size, or facial features that could tell you if someone was a leader. You’re either born a leader or you’re not. You either have the traits or you don’t. And if you don’t … well, it’s simply your job to follow the people who do – the “Great Men.”

As Jesus-followers, we see leadership differently...

St. Luke's Week in Review

We Did It, St. Luke's!

Thanks to your amazing efforts, we collected over 1,000 lbs of plastic in the NexTrex Recycling Challenge and earned our first recycled bench for the campus! This bench is more than just a place to sit—it’s a symbol of our community’s commitment to keeping waste out of landfills.

But we’re not stopping here! Keep bringing your clean, dry plastic film to the white NexTrex bins near both worship venues, and help us get bench #2!

Yes, please bring:

• Grocery bags

• Bread bags

• Case overwrap (from bottled water, paper towels, etc.)

• Plastic shipping envelopes

• Bubble wrap & air pillows

Please do NOT bring:

Learning Why We Do What We Do!

Pastor Melissa led a wonderful Discover St. Luke's class this week, where participants got to learn more about who we are as a church—what we believe, how we practice faith in community, our mission and values, and ways to get more involved in the life of the church.

Have you taken Discover and are you ready for your next step? Join us for our Partnership Class on Sunday (August 24) at 11:15 a.m. on campus! You’ll explore what it means to become a Partner (Member), take a brief campus tour, and dive deeper into our history and core beliefs.

A Time of Music, Joy, and Community

Our Sanctuary Choir spent last weekend learning new music, meeting new friends, and growing together as a joyful, Spirit-filled community at their fall retreat. From hilarious games and delicious BBQ, to singing their hearts out, it was a time full of laughter, love, and fun.

They also took time to celebrate and honor Joline Krolicki, a St. Luker and dear friend, whose presence and spirit were felt all weekend.

The group is thrilled to be back in the loft leading worship each week in the Sanctuary! ALL are welcome to join them for rehearsal and fellowship on Wednesday nights from 7:00–9:00 p.m.!

Want to do something extra special this season? Join the Community Choir for our annual Christmas Concert! It’s the perfect way to meet new people and share the joy of Christmas through music. Learn more and sign up at st.lukes.org/concertchoir!

  • "Your Week with St. Luke's" Podcast - In this episode, Pastor Jenn calls us to be Change Makers by lifting our voices for justice through Proverbs 31:8–9 and Micah 6:8. These scriptures challenge us to move from private faith to public action—speaking up for the voiceless, practicing mercy, and walking humbly with God. This episode reminds us that justice is love made visible. Where is your voice needed today?

  • Do your little ones love to sing? WeeSingers is the perfect place for them to make music, learn about God’s love, and have fun with friends! No experience needed—just joyful voices and big smiles. Rehearsals start September 7. Click here for more information and to sign up.
