Celebrating Black History Month: A Reflection by Bonita Thomas - February 20, 2025

Black history is not an exclusive term, rather, it is used to highlight the contributions of countless Americans to our society. We have to understand Black history is American history. We can not have one without the other. From pioneering cultural movements, advancements in the arts, science, and politics, to the fight for equality and justice, Black Americans have played a crucial role in shaping the country we know today. Celebrating Black History Month isn't just about highlighting the struggles, but also the triumphs, resilience, and innovation that continue to influence every aspect of American life.

Faith and social justice intersect powerfully when we celebrate Black history, as they both call for an acknowledgment of human dignity, equity, and the pursuit of liberation. Throughout history, faith leaders, particularly within Black communities, have often been at the forefront of advocating for justice and civil rights. Many religious traditions have teachings that emphasize the worth of every individual, the importance of standing up against oppression, and the need for community within marginalized groups.

St. Luke's The Sound of Music Makes an Impact!

This week, St. Luke’s was honored as Faith Leader of the Year for The Central Florida Pledge during a celebration of The Pledge's launch anniversary! This recognition was awarded for our production of The Sound of Music last summer, where we intentionally highlighted The Pledge and brought critical issues of hate and resistance to life on stage.

Through the powerful story of The Sound of Music, we reminded our community of the courage it takes to stand up against hate and oppression. The show’s themes of resilience, love, and justice align with the mission of The Central Florida Pledge, which calls on individuals and organizations to commit to inclusion, equity, and standing against discrimination in all its forms.

We are so grateful for this recognition and for the opportunity to use the arts to inspire, challenge, and transform hearts. This award belongs to every cast member, crew member, staff member, and audience member who engaged in these vital conversations.

Let’s continue the work of building a more just and loving world—together.
