Serving Hope Together: A Reflection by Beth Ely

Thirty-seven years ago, I joined a small group of volunteers from St. Luke’s preparing meals for Coalition for the Homeless. What started as a simple act of kindness has grown into a deeply meaningful ministry that touches hundreds of lives each month, including mine.

Over the years, I’ve seen the faces of homelessness change, from men on the streets of downtown Orlando to women and families with nowhere to sleep and not knowing where they’d get their next meal. Families, single parents, women, men, veterans, and senior citizens —each with their own story of struggle—come through the doors of Coalition. Some are facing sudden, life-altering circumstances, while others are navigating challenges they’ve lived with for years. The one constant is their courage to keep going.

Every third Saturday, we prepare dinner for 350 individuals at Coalition. It’s no small task. From chopping vegetables to making quiches and serving homemade soup, it takes a team of dedicated volunteers to make it happen. And yet, it never feels like “work.” There’s something deeply satisfying about serving a fresh, wholesome meal to someone who otherwise may not know where their next one will come from. I’ll never forget...

St. Luke's Week in Review

Circles Holiday Party & Toy Shop: A Heartwarming Success!

Thanks to the incredible generosity and support from our St. Luke’s family, the Circles West Orange Holiday Party and Toy Shop last week was a joyful celebration that brought smiles to so many faces!

We are thrilled to share that a total of 1,268 presents were donated, far surpassing our goal of 300 toys! These donations helped provide a memorable holiday experience for 103 children from underserved families in East Winter Garden, giving families a chance to choose gifts that reflect their kid’s wishes and dreams. Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of St. Lukers, we received so many extra gifts that we were able to donate toys to several additional partner organizations, including 8 Waves, Determine Now, and more—helping to spread holiday cheer even further across our community.

This event goes beyond just gift-giving. It offers a meaningful way to support families who are working hard to break the cycle of poverty. Through Circles West Orange, families build long-term financial stability and develop strong support networks. The Toy Shop and Holiday Party help ease the burden many families feel during the holiday season, providing much-needed joy and resources while reminding them they are not alone on this journey.

A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Circles West Orange and Poverty Solutions Group (PSG) teams for their dedicated planning and organizing that laid the foundation for this successful event. We also extend our deep gratitude to the over 150 St. Luke’s volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this event a reality. From pricing, organizing, and transporting toys to decorating, making crafts, serving food, wrapping presents, hosting activities, and singing karaoke. Special thanks as well to Winter Garden City Commissioner Chloe Bronson and Danykqua Faulk, president of One Winter Garden, for attending and showing their support!

Not only was this event a blessing for Circles families, but it also served as a wonderful opportunity to introduce more people to the work of the Poverty Solutions Group, which focuses on empowering families in East Winter Garden.

We couldn’t have done this without the amazing generosity of our donors and volunteers. Thank you for helping us spread holiday cheer and making a lasting impact on our community!
