Monk-In-Residence

Brother James Dowd will be preaching at both services on Sunday, March 18th (one week from this Sunday) and will lead an Adult Forum after the 10:00 Mass.

Brother James is a Benedictine monk in the Episcopal Church and currently serves in the Diocese of Nebraska, having previously served in upstate New York and in South Africa. As a monk, Br. James ministers as a spiritual director, retreat leader, teacher, and chaplain to the hungry and homeless. He has just been named as Prior of Incarnation Monastery in Omaha and the Benedictine Service Corps, an intentional community for young adults.
 
The Adult Forum will focus on Benedictine spirituality, it’s connection to Anglican theology and spirituality, and its uses for Christians who are not monks or nuns.

Spirituality unTapped is a monthly event where young adults from all walks of life get together for good disc ussion over drinks or coffee. It is jointly hosted by St. Andrews Episcopal Church and St. Mary's Episcopal Church.

St. Mary's Belles
All the ladies of St. Mary's are invited to Betty Iorg's home on March 16th at 1pm for fun, fellowship, and a good discussion. The book "Why We Should All be Feminists" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie is the book being studied and discussed.

Private Confession
A priest will be available to offer spiritual guidance and sacramental confession each Saturday during Lent from 10:00am-10:45am in St. George's Chapel (Saturday, February 17, through Saturday, March 31st, inclusive). Because Downtown Outreach will be using the parish hall at that time, please enter the church through the street entrance on the northwest side of the building. You may also schedule time with Fr. Upcoming Events
  • New England Conservatory Chamber Singers, Erica Washburn, conductor, 7:30pm, Saturday, March 17, 2018, St. Mary’s Episcopal Church, Free Admission. A freewill donation will be taken to benefit music ministry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. The NEC Chamber Singers is an auditioned ensemble, open to all majors at NEC, of 24 musicians that perform challenging works from all style periods, with a particular emphasis on early music and 19th–21st century a cappella works. Primarily drawn from the members of the NEC Concert Choir, they rehearse twice a week and experience choral music-making in an intimate ensemble setting. The Chamber Singers are making their first Midwestern tour! Don’t miss an opportunity to hear beautiful music from one of our nation’s oldest and most prestigious conservatories.
  • Solemn Choral Evensong. Sunday, April 8th, 7:00pm, at St. Mary's. KC VITAs, Kansas City's premier new-music choir, is presenting the world-premiere of a new choral evensong by composer L.V. Wood. This unique service was composed with the architectural features of St. Mary's in mind and features a number of singers from St. Mary's own choir. Mark your calendars now to attend this beautiful collaboration between KC VITAs Chamber Choir and St. Mary's. Fr. Charles Everson will be the officiant.
This year, as we have the past two years, we will be joining forces with our sister parish, St. Augustine's, for two of the Holy Week Services. Holy Week begins on Palm Sunday, March 25th, and ends on Easter Day, April 1st. Here are some details:

  • Palm Sunday. Normal service times: 8:00am and 10:00am.
  • Maundy Thursday at St. Augustine's. 6:00pm. Our choir will sing a beautiful setting of the Ubi Caritas, and St. Augustine's musicians will provide the rest of the music.
  • Good Friday. 6:00pm. The choir is singing a lovely setting of the Passion, and there will be communion from the reserve sacrament.
  • Holy Saturday. A brief Holy Saturday service will occur in place of the 11:05 Mass.
  • The Great Vigil of Easter. 8:00pm. Bishop Marty Field will be the celebrant and preacher. Members of St. Augustine's are invited to join us at St. Mary's for this service.
  • Easter Sunday. Normal service times: 8:00am and 10:00am.
