Message from the Chair

Dear Colleagues,

Updates for Our Mid-Year Meeting

As we reflect on our great year so far, it's time to turn our attention to the upcoming Mid-Year meeting. I'm thrilled to share some important updates and reminders that will enhance our experience.

Meeting Together with the Florida Bar

This year, we're returning to our prior practice and meeting with the Florida Bar for our Winter Meeting. Our venue will be the Rosen Shingle Creek on Universal Boulevard in Orlando. While we've enjoyed our independent gatherings in the past, this collaboration offers cost-effectiveness and enhanced networking opportunities with our Bar colleagues. We think you will like it.

Maximizing Our Limited In-Person Meetings

Remember, we only meet in person three times a year:

  • Labor Day Retreat
  • Mid-Year Meeting
  • Annual Meeting

To ensure we maintain momentum and achieve our goals, it's crucial that committees and task forces meet monthly via video or telephone. This practice becomes even more critical given the space constraints at the upcoming Mid-Year meeting.

Planning for the Mid-Year Meeting

We'll soon be reaching out to committee and task force leaders to gather essential information:

  • Need for in-person meetings
  • Expected attendance numbers
  • Planned discussion topics
  • Audio/visual requirements

While we'll do our best to accommodate all requests, we may need to set up Zoom meetings for some groups due to space limitations. Your flexibility is greatly appreciated

Importance to Meet and Upcoming Questionnaires

Don't forget to schedule your January meetings! We'll be distributing questionnaires to our chairs soon, focusing on:

  • Work accomplished over the past year
  • Succession planning

Your input is vital, so please ensure these meetings take place.

Highlight of the Mid-Year Meeting: the BLS Luncheon

I'm excited to announce our distinguished speaker for the BLS Luncheon is Melanie Cyganowski, member at Otterbourg, P.C., and retired Chief Judge of the Bankruptcy Court of the Eastern District of New York. Judge Cyganowski will address one of the most hotly debated topics in legal circles today: non- consensual third-party releases in light of the Supreme Court's ruling in Harrington v. Purdue Pharma, L.P. This presentation promises to be an enlightening discussion for both bankruptcy and non-bankruptcy lawyers alike.

We look forward to seeing you all at what promises to be an engaging and productive Mid-Year meeting!

Best,

Manny

BLS Blog: How to Write a Dispute Letter

By Daniel Cohen

What does a dispute letter entail and why do I need to know how to write a credit dispute letter? Great questions!

A dispute letter is a letter that consumers send to credit bureaus, such as Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, to challenge information on a credit report that the consumer believes is incorrect, untimely, misleading, or incomplete. Disputes give credit bureaus an opportunity to review, edit, and update credit reports with the most up to date information.

Pro Bono Opportunities

Below is a fabulous pro bono opportunity from the ABA Pro Bono Committee for a volunteer attorney to join a drafting group and assist with drafting a Youth Compensation Legal Guide. The pro bono request is to assist with the chapters on (1) business law and (2) contracts. The attorney does not need to know about youth homelessness; rather, they're looking for a business law/contracts attorney who can bring that knowledge to the table. Learn more here.
