CBPA Joins Local BOMAs at Winter Business Meeting

CBPA President & CEO Matthew Hargrove joined representatives from California Chapters of the Building Owners and Managers Association (BOMA) in Washington D.C. this week to advocate on behalf of our industry in the U.S. Capitol at BOMA’s Winter Business Meeting.

Attendees met with members of Congress, White House staff, and agency personnel to advocate for commercial real estate. A piece of legislation our California delegation advocated for was H.R. 1491: The Small Business Energy Loan Enhancement Act. The bill will increase the small business loan cap for access to capital for building improvements. CBPA is proud to partner with aligned organizations to support the causes that matter most to our industry!

Devastating Hydrogen Bill AB 1550 Dies in Committee

CBPA along with a large coalition of business groups lobbied in opposition to AB 1550 (Bennett; D-Oxnard), a bill that would have had devastating consequences for the launch of a clean, sustainable, and affordable hydrogen market in California.

AB 1550 would have limited production and dramatically increased the cost of hydrogen production and use. California energy costs are already unsustainable, and AB 1550 would have pushed them far higher. The bill was held in committee without receiving a vote.

CalChamber Joins Legal Challenge to SB 253 and SB 261

On Tuesday, CBPA partner organization CalChamber announced that it has joined the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other allied groups in bringing a lawsuit that challenges California’s new climate reporting laws—SB 253 (Wiener; D-San Francisco) and SB 261 (Stern; D-Canoga Park). The lawsuit asserts that both SB 253 and SB 261 unconstitutionally compel speech in violation of the First Amendment and conflict with existing federal law and the Constitution’s delegation to Congress of the power to regulate interstate commerce.

SB 253 was heavily opposed by CBPA along with a massive coalition of business groups. The bill requires any business entity with total annual revenues more than $1 billion to publicly report their annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. These disclosures will include corporate supply chains (scope 3), which can include more than 90% of a corporation’s carbon emission.
