October 13, 2024

Led by Rev. Misty-Dawn Shelly

I am very happy to be starting in my expanded role of Lifespan Faith Development and Outreach, and I am so excited to see what we can accomplish together! I appreciate your leap of faith in trying a new way to grow, expand, and make new connections within our community. I look forward to my continued work with all of you - UUCSW is a special place, and I feel fortunate to be a part of your spiritual home.

Warmly,

Book Group

Our next book group meeting will be Friday, October 11  at 7 pm. We will be discussin Takeover! A Human Rights Approach to Housing, by Cheri Honkala (and co-creator Amanda Hall)

Cheri Honkala and the entire Poor People’s Army are finally sharing their secrets for reclaiming abandoned government-owned housing, making it safe, and helping homeless families move in. Takeover homes are a survival tactic that provide families with emergency housing on their own terms. Takeovers are also living political protests that condemn the oppression of those who fall through the gaping holes in government services. After thirty years of trial-and-error in Philadelphia and throughout the US, the Poor People’s Army is ready to share their expertise with people all over the world who are asserting their human right to housing – without waiting for a rigged system to save them.

Youth Group for Hire!

Do you have odd jobs around the house that you could use help with? Consider hiring the teens from our youth group! Youth group is trying to raise funds to attend General Assembly in Baltimore this spring, and would love to help you out as they work toward their goal.

Examples of work they are able to do: Raking, shoveling, moving boxes, small cleaning jobs, paint touch-ups, furniture assembly, pet-sitting, and dog walking. If you have a job and you're not sure - just ask!

100% of the funds earned will go into the YG fund. The rate will depend on the job, but typically will be $15-20/hour with a minimum of one hour.

Please reach out to Colleen at colleen.munson@uucsw.org for more information or questions.

Crafty Volunteering Opportunities!

Helping Hands Needed

We could use some help from artsy-craftsy folks with touching up a few of our RE spaces and classroom items. Some things that would be helpful are:

  • Updating our bulletin boards
  • Helping create sample crafts for RE lessons
  • Updating our chalice lighting board

You do not need to be part of the RE program to help out! If you enjoy crafts and would like to help with a one-time project, please contact Colleen or Erin Gold.

Thank you!
