I am back in the office following our Sabbatical time away this summer, and I wanted to begin with a very big THANK YOU to every one of you! This is an amazing gift that our congregation provides for its rostered leaders. Without having to balance many different responsibilities, I was able to spend time and attention with my family and with myself. Deacon Stacey and I were able to be fully present with our children, and this was the most amazing gift of all!
That said, there were many times when my mind would drift to happenings at Grace. I would wonder how the Sunday services were going and whether the Council was on top of the preparations for the Annual Congregational Meeting. And in those moments, it was your example that encouraged me to honor the bounds of this time away.
As I step back into ministry at Grace, I find myself energized with a new sense of clarity about my role and what the ministry of our congregation can be in the future. In some ways, it feels like taking a new call. I step in with fresh eyes and perspective, and yet, because of our longstanding relationship, I believe that we will be able to move forward with focus more quickly.
I was talking with a new friend the other day. He asked me how long I had been at Grace. When I told him that I had been here for 6 years, he said something to the effect of, “Well, I guess that means your time is winding down.” Of course, in some denominations this is true. However, in many ways, I feel that we are still just getting started. After taking this time of Sabbatical rest, I believe that we are ready to take on the next chapter of ministry together!
There is much more to write and say, but there will be time for that in the coming weeks and months. Again, for today, for this week, I really just want to say “Thank You.” This was an amazing gift for our family that we will remember for our whole lives! And, I am really looking forward to seeing everyone again on Sunday!
In Grace,
Pastor Steve
