Over the weekend, ISNA held its Spring Leadership Retreat. The ISNA Executive Committee met on Friday, April 6 while the ISNA Board of Directors met on Saturday, April 7, 2017. ISNA at the A.C.T. to End Racism Rally

ISNA President Azhar Azeez joined Rev. Dr. Elizabeth Miller, President Northern Province, Provincial Elders Conference (PEC) Moravian Church in North America, Bishop Clement W. Fugh, President Council of Bishops African Methodist Episcopal Church, and Jim Winkler, President and General Secretary of the National Council of the Churches to address the A.C.T to End Racism rally on April 4, 2018.

A.C.T. to End Racism was a 3-day a historic event in Washington DC organized by the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA to launch its Truth and Racial Justice Initiative. In recognition of 50 years since the assassination of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. this gathering is a recommitment "to do our part to eradicate the entrenched racism that grips the United States and paralyzes our ability to see every human being as equal."

A.C.T. stands for:
AWAKEN oneself to the truth that racism is ever-present, deeply rooted in American culture, and profoundly damaging to our communities.
CONFRONT racism, speak truth to power, and stand up against injustice.
TRANSFORM the hearts, minds, and behaviors of people and institutions.

ISNA is proud to be an official endorser of A.C.T. to End Racism and committed to taking more substantive action on systemic, internalized white supremacy within the Muslim community and our own organization.
IOICA Emphasizes Dangers for Struggling Families in Potential Farm Bill

Last week, IOICA Director Colin Christopher and the other faith leaders from the Washington Interreligious Staff Community's Domestic Human Needs (DHN) group held meetings with staff from the offices of Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-N.D.) and Senator Tina Smith (D-M.N.)--both members of the Senate Agricultural Committee-- to discuss the upcoming Farm Bill. DHN emphasized how U.S. House Republican pledges to include stricter work requirements for recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would likely leave millions of families in deep food insecurity. Colin and his colleagues also noted in the meeting that eliminating eligibility to basic food for families is a sure way to decrease able-bodied workers' chances from finding good paying jobs, and that any serious interest in helping struggling families would better come in the form of job training, fair scheduling, and wage increases. Staff assured DHN that both Senate Democrats and Republicans are opposed to further work requirements and that upcoming House legislation will face strong opposition. IOICA will continue to work on this, and other issues that directly affect the basic human needs of all Americans.
We are saddened by the news of the passing of Dr. Irfan Ahmed Khan.

He was a scholar of Quran and revered community leader. His book, Reflections on the Quran: Understanding Surahs Al-Fatihah & Al-Baqarah, provided readers an in-depth study and introduction to the Quran. Many in both the Muslim and interfaith community looked up to Dr. Khan as a mentor and teacher. We were honored to present Dr. Khan our Community Service Recognition Award at last year's interfaith banquet during the Annual Convention.

To God we belong and to Him we return.
May Allah grant Dr. Khan the highest station in paradise and give his family and community patience during this difficult time.
ISNA Seeks Transformative Leader:
Executive Director Search Announced

The Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) announced today a search for an Executive Director (ED) to lead the organization at a very historic point in its history. The ED is a new position created as a result of the historic overhaul of the organization's bylaws effective January 1, 2018. The former position known as Secretary General has been abolished.

In consultation with the Executive Committee and more broadly the ISNA Board of Directors, the ED will provide visionary and strategic leadership to build on ISNA's history of service to Islam and Muslims in North America. Dr. Asra Ali, chair of the ED search committee emphasizes that "the new ED will use her or his skills and proven senior level management experience to position the organization to achieve excellence in the creation and delivery of programs and services to meet the needs of our diverse and growing Muslim community."
