Minister's Corner

Dear friends,

October has arrived with a warm, sunny day and LOTS of pumpkins. As a community we are now moving into a month reflecting on courage. So many great things have happened because someone had the courage to try it or understand it. In our lives, the courage to get up and go is transformational and yet, sometimes hard to do. When we are afraid, or nervous, that courage we might have once had goes right out the window. Knowing that we have a community behind us restores our courage and allows us to move forward to act with courage.

As a leadership team, we have had the courage to try some new things this year, including introducing meditation (information coming soon) and more lay-led services like we have this coming Sunday. We are taking a risk, trying new things and hoping that this courage will bring about wonderful things. I hope you can join us on Sunday, October 4th to hear from Kirsten Snow in her "Musings on Fall".

Blessings,

Liz

News from Sunday Adventures

It’s been so much fun seeing everyone enjoy the activity area during coffee hour! See pictures below.

For the month of October, we’ll be exploring what it means to be courageous people. This week, we’re kicking off our theme by thinking about our true selves and discovering the many different ways we can be courageous.

For this Sunday’s activity (October 4), please have your child bring a favorite stuffie (stuffed animal) with them to church.

See you on Sunday!

The Main Street Pumpkin Patch – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED THIS WEEKEND!

Saturday, October 3 — Sunday, October 18, 9am-5pm

We need your help to make this fundraiser a success!

The pumpkins have been delivered and our front yard is a sea of carvers, sugars and fancies. Thank you to everyone who came out to help unload the trucks. The Hearse House is decorated, and we are ready to open! We expect sunny and mild temps both days and expect the Patch to be busy.

We still have two shifts that need filling for Sunday:

• 9-12 noon (1 person)

• 12 noon-3pm (2 people)

Note: we are considering being open on Monday, October 12 (Indigenous Peoples Day). Let us know if you are available and interested in working a shift.

Click here to sign up on the Sign Up Genius.

See below for more details on volunteer opportunities.

Work at the Patch: This year, we have 2- and 3-hour shifts available. If you choose a 3-hour shift but can only do 2 hours, that’s fine. When you sign up, just make a note.

Pie Making: There are still open spots to help with pie making. Our goal is to have 20 pies for opening weekend. No previous experience is needed! Contact Mary Collins if you have any questions. lizzitish3@verizon.net

Volunteer Opportunity:

Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN)

If you are looking for a way to make a difference, this just might be it. Boston Immigration Justice Accompaniment Network (BIJAN) is a network of volunteers in the Boston area supporting people in ICE detention in New England. BIJAN is recruiting new volunteers to help support this important outreach. Your involvement can be as simple as becoming a penpal to a detainee or making outreach calls to families. Other volunteer opportunities involve accompanying detainees during virtual or in-court hearings or staffing the BIJAN hotline.

A new volunteer information and orientation session is scheduled for September 27th from 2:00 to 3:30 online. If you’re interested in learning more about BIJAN, please complete the registration form below. If you are interested but unable to attend at that time, please reach out to Karen Delano at ktdel@comcast.net . Karen has been a letter writer with BIJAN for a long time, and she can arrange to have the Information emailed to you.

Sunday Hospitality Schedule

Our Sunday morning hospitality is key to our reputation as a friendly, welcoming congregation. Please save the attached schedule and make a note of your assignments. If you will not be able to do a task, please first try to find a substitute or exchange days with another parishioner. If you have any questions or would like to volunteer for one of these assignments, please get in touch with Susan Weisenbeck.

Basic job descriptions:

Ushers should be at church by 9:40 to prepare the sanctuary for the service and be ready to greet attendees and hand out orders of worship.

Coffee Hour providers usually arrive by 9:30 to set up and prepare for social hour. Typically just one person is assigned for coffee hour, but feel free to enlist help from friends and family. People are always willing to provide some stuffed eggs or a plate of cookies! If you would like help but don't know who to ask, please get in touch with Susan.

Flowers: Please provide a small arrangement for the front of the pulpit. It may come from your garden or be purchased.

Don't forget to download the schedule and make a note of your assignments. Thanks everyone!
