UUCSW Announcements

Colleen's Vacation & Weekly Update Announcements

Colleen will be on vacation from Sat, July 22 through Sun, Aug 6. If you have any announcements over the next two weeks, please put them in the UUCSW Facebook group.

Advisors Needed!

Would you like to make a difference without making a huge time commitment? Come work (and have lots of fun!) with our High School Youth Group! Our youth group is small but mighty. They meet 2x per month on Sunday evenings, and will be doing some community service work this year. We need 2 additional advisors so that we can split the time commitment - ideally, each advisor would commit to one meeting per month.

Please consider accompanying our amazing youth as they plan, prepare, and bring our UU values out into the world!

News from SHAG (Sexual Health and Gender Justice Group)

Next meeting is 8/17 at 3 pm online- to be facilitated by Rev. Laurel.

Please support the Healthy Youth Act to update sex ed in public schools!  Its like OWL for all the kids in the state!! Let the Mass state administration know if you support this updated bill for sex ed in public schools - they need letters of support BEFORE AUGUST 28. We need YOU to submit a comment showing your support for these updated guidelines. Sign the letter here.

Please see the attached message from Planned Parenthood for more info:

Massachusetts’ health education guidelines, which inform the sex and relationship education taught in our schools, haven’t been updated since 1999. But with your help, sex education in Massachusetts could finally enter the 21st century!

On June 21, the Healey-Driscoll administration released a new draft of the comprehensive health and physical education curriculum framework. This LGBTQ+ inclusive, medically accurate, and developmentally- and age-appropriate framework outlines guidelines for health and physical education for preK-12 public school students in Massachusetts. It’s also in alignment with the Healthy Youth Act, one of the Planned Parenthood Advocacy Fund of Massachusetts’ (PPAF’s) priority bills for the 2023-24 legislative session.

Celebrate Diversity

July is Disability Pride Month

The Americans with Disabilities Act was signed on July 26, 1990.

  • The first Disability Pride Day was held in Boston in 1990.
  • The first Disability Pride Parade was held in Chicago in 2004.
  • New York City observed the first official Disability Pride Month in July 2015, the ADA’s twenty-fifth anniversary.

From The Arc website: "Disability is a part of the rich tapestry of human diversity, and something that nearly all of us will experience at some point in our lives. It’s also a significant identity that defines how we experience the world. Yet people with disabilities have been marginalized and misunderstood for generations. All disabilities and their intersecting identities should be acknowledged, valued, and respected, and one way to do that is during Disability Pride Month."

There are many resources to find out more about the history of the ADA. One great resource is the Netflix documentary "Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution". Find out more about the movie here: https://cripcamp.com/
