Weekly Update - May 6th, 2021
Sunday Service: "Radical Roots of Mother's Day"
led by Phyllis Samara
May 9th at 10:30 am
This week’s service will visit radical mothers in history and today. There will be a re-enacting of the story of the Mother’s Day Proclamation given by Julia Ward Howe in 1870, and mothers telling their stories. No two mothers’ stories are the same; we’ll reflect on the diversity of mothers, the capacity of mothering relationships, and the importance of our relationships with mother figures and how it impacts our decision to mother. (Please note: the sermon will include references to methods of conception and miscarriage.)

UU Mass Action Regional Teams
UU Mass Action’s mission is to organize and mobilize UUs in Massachusetts to confront oppression by providing pathways towards justice and identifying opportunities in which we can live our shared values. UU Mass Action's work is grounded in racial justice and the organization both builds relationships with and centers the leadership of those who are most impacted by forms of oppression and injustice.

UU Mass Action has created a Worcester County Regional Team – a few UUCSW members have already joined. The next meeting is May 13th. The goal of these regional teams is:

  • To facilitate relationship building between congregations, and with UU Mass Action
  • To connect local congregational work to state-wide work
  • To support each other in building local allyship with frontline groups
  • To be a resource for each other, share learnings, campaign updates from across issue areas, etc.
  • To build power for justice together
  • To be better set up to take action together

If you are interested in being involved, reach out to Tali Smookler at tsmookler@uumassaction.org, or fill out this interest form.

SMOC Food Drive for May
Please consider participating in a food drive to benefit the South Middlesex Opportunity Council (SMOC). They are especially in need of: 6-8 ounce juice boxes; fresh fruit, especially apples and clementines; 16 oz. packages of bologna; and soft granola bars. There will be a collection on Thursday, May 27th between 4:30 and 5:45 pm at the Ruggles Street door. Please reach out to Libba Moore at libbamoore13@gmail.com ahead of time if there’s a better time for you. Thank you for your help with this.
Clothing Drive for SMOC
SMOC has identified the need for clothing, especially for men. Donated items can include: new socks and underwear, and gently used sweatshirts, sweatpants, T-shirts, and jeans. Please bring your donations to UUCSW on Thursday, May 27th between 4:30 and 5:45 pm, the same day/time as the monthly food drive. If this timing does not work for you, please reach out to Nancy Siegal at Nsiegal185@msn.com or Pauline Sciarappa at psciarappa@gmail.com for other options.
