Weekly Update - December 12th, 2019
Sunday Service: Festival of Lights
December 15th at 10:30 am
Hanukkah is often portrayed as a sort of “Jewish Christmas” because it falls in December, but it has a very different origin. Today we’ll explore the importance and history of Hanukkah as a distinctly Jewish holiday. Led by Rev. Laurel Gray.
This Week in Religious Education
Join us this week for our Religious Education Classes! We will begin in the Sanctuary before heading downstairs for our RE lessons. RE Classes will end at 11:45 when parents can pick up their kids from the RE classrooms downstairs. Thanks!
Children’s Choir and Pageant! This December we will be bringing back our children’s choir! If your children like to sing, invite them out on Sunday mornings during December at 9:50 am to practice some holiday songs with our choir. We will also be practicing for our Family Friendly Christmas Pageant on December 15th during RE time. We will perform these songs and the pageant on December 22nd. For more information please see Cassie Lengel or Kala Farnham.
Youth Group: A reminder that our Youth Group meeting is postponed from this Sunday, December 15th until a time in January for a fun event combined with our 7th-8th grade group. We look forward to seeing you there!
Informal Intergenerational Winter Potluck
Join us for an informal, intergenerational Winter Potluck, organized by the Program Committee, on December 29th at 10:30 am in the Chapel to celebrate the new year ahead! Bring a poem or writing you’d like to share about the season or maybe the coming new year. There may be a "sing-a-long" too! Please review the available slots and sign up on SignUp Genius. (Please also sign up so we know that we have enough food.) Thank you!
A Special Request from the Membership Team
On behalf of the membership caring team, join us in helping Richard and Tanya Trainor provide a special Christmas for their five young children. They are looking for gift certificates for local experiences such as Sky Zone, Altitude, Urban Air, movie tickets, restaurants (Bertuccis, McDonalds, etc.), roller skating, bowling, Tower Hill, Claytime, Board and Brush, museums, etc. If you prefer that we do the shopping for you, contributions are welcome by mail, in the form of check (mailed to the UUCSW at Box 544) or in the weekly collection by check or cash in a small gift envelope with the note “Trainor family” on the memo line or envelope. Lisa Shumway will be collecting unwrapped gifts at church or by arrangement until December 22nd. Thank you in advance for your generosity. If you have questions, please contact Lisa Shumway at Membership@uucsw.org.
Poinsettias for the Sanctuary
As is our tradition, we will once again decorate the Sanctuary with beautiful poinsettias from December 15th through Christmas Eve. We have ordered a dozen single red poinsettias wrapped in gold foil from Danielson Flowers. You can help us by purchasing one or two plants for $12.50 each. Click this link to sign-up to purchase a plant: Poinsettia Sign-Up. Please make checks payable to UUCSW with "Poinsettia" in the memo. You can put your check in the collection plate, or hand it to Sharon Barrett. Don't forget to take your plant(s) home after the service on Christmas Eve!
