Addressing homelessness is a key issue for our industry given its impacts to the business community across the state. In addition to supporting Proposition 1, CBPA and Pacific Legal Foundation filed a brief in the City of Grants Pass v. Johnson homeless crisis case pending before the supreme court.
We argue that a solution to this crisis does not include creating a new constitutional right for the homeless to sleep and camp in public parks and on sidewalks. Rather, cities have a constitutional and legal authority to address the homeless crisis in a way that protects public order, protects our businesses and property rights, while also treating the homeless in a humane way. Second, our brief highlights that decades of heavy-handed government land use regulations have priced too many out of the housing market by limiting development. The case will be argued to the nine justices on April 22nd.
