Last legislative cycle, CBPA alongside a coalition of business groups successfully lobbied against SB 799 (Portantino; D-Burbank), a bill, which was heavily backed by organized labor that would have been disastrous for businesses large and small and would have ballooned California's already high federal unemployment insurance debt.
The measure aimed to provide Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits to individuals who left work and chose to go on strike during a labor dispute. The bill was ultimately vetoed by Governor Newsom. However, the bill has been reintroduced by Senator Portantino in the form of SB 1116, like the vetoed legislation, SB 1116 aims to allow workers who have been on strike for at least two weeks to claim UI benefits. We will continue to provide updates on this proposed legislation as they become available.
