Fire Response and Recovery Legislative Packages

In response to the devastating wildfires that have ravaged California in recent years, including in the Los Angeles area last month, state lawmakers have introduced a series of legislative packages aimed at addressing the crisis from multiple angles.

These measures focus on wildfire prevention, emergency response, insurance market stability, and holding responsible parties accountable for climate-related damages.

New Legislation Spotlight: SB 222

Senate Bill 222 (Wiener; D-San Francisco) would allow homeowners, businesses, and insurers to seek damages from fossil fuel companies for climate-related disasters, shifting financial burdens away from ratepayers.

A comprehensive economic impact analysis of SB 222 conducted by the Center for Jobs and the Economy reveals that the legislation will unleash billions in litigation costs, force businesses to shut down, and drive insurance premiums higher for all Californians—without meaningfully addressing climate risks or stabilizing the insurance market.
