October is Learning Differences Awareness Month

Our Fourth Pillar | Build a Foundation for Life

By addressing deficits, teaching strategies, and strengthening stamina, we prepare students for successful transitions to alternative learning environments.

Throughout Dyslexia and Learning Disabilities Awareness Month, we have been reflecting on each of the four pillars that are the bedrock of what we do at Trident Academy. As this month of celebration draws to a close, we will review our last pillar: Foundation for Life.

Everything we do at Trident Academy builds toward this final pillar. During the past three weeks, I wrote about meeting individual needs, promoting academic growth, and providing encouragement and support. Individualized instruction helps students become independent. As students grow academically, they develop the confidence to try new and more challenging things. The care and nurture students receive through their teachers’ encouragement and support provide a safe environment where students are not afraid to take academic risks and work on the next hard task. Putting all of these together on a daily basis naturally helps students build a firm foundation on which to stand, grow, and mature.

As I mentioned last week, I receive great joy in watching our students learn, grow, and become beautifully engaged learners. The transformation that occurs at Trident Academy has no time frame associated with it. Each individual student progresses through our hallways at a different pace. Some catch on quickly and move through our academic and executive functioning programs within a couple of years. Other students may need more time to catch on, catch up, and gain the confidence needed to achieve success elsewhere. No matter what the individual trajectory is, we celebrate each success as it happens and continue to push our students to reach their goals.

Because each student brings their own strengths and weaknesses to the table, along with any learned avoidance practices and bad habits, it may take a while for them to gain trust in our strategies. Ultimately, this can slow down the transition progression.

The timing of the transition progression is unique to each student. Some students transition to other schools from Trident's lower school, while others may make the transition in middle or high school. The families of some Trident students prefer to have their children remain at our school through their high school graduation.  There are a number of reasons for this, all having to do with the individual student's needs, family goals, and expectations for the future. Trident Academy graduates become accountants, flight attendants, mechanics, Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriters, artists, small business owners, entrepreneurs, and more. Some of our graduates even return to teach or work at Trident Academy!

The future is bright for our students, no matter when they transition: elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and, ultimately, life!

Have a safe and happy Halloween!

Blessings,

Betsy

Each week during Dyslexia Awareness Month, we will highlight a noteworthy person who has persevered in the face of learning challenges.

Steven Spielberg, the legendary film director behind classics like E.T., Jurassic Park, and Schindler's List, did not discover he had dyslexia until he was 60 years old. Throughout his childhood and early career, he struggled significantly with reading, often taking twice as long as his peers to finish a book. His difficulties in the classroom, coupled with his deep passion for filmmaking, sometimes made him feel "different" and led to feelings of anxiety about his academic performance. However, his difficulty with the written word pushed him toward visual storytelling—a path where his unique mind could truly excel. He channeled his energy into filmmaking, developing a strong visual narrative style that would become his trademark in Hollywood.

Spielberg's late diagnosis and incredible success serve as an inspiring message that learning differences are not roadblocks, but simply different ways of processing the world. While he struggled with traditional learning methods, his dyslexia likely enhanced his ability to think visually and spatially, skills essential for a brilliant film director. He has since become an advocate for those with learning disabilities, encouraging students to embrace their unique strengths and find ways to learn and express themselves outside of conventional expectations. His story proves that challenges in one area can often lead to extraordinary gifts and groundbreaking achievements in another.

Rewined Candles Fundraiser!

It's time for our Rewined Candle Fundraiser! Please return the order forms by Thursday, November 13 -- they went home in backpacks this week. Candles make great gifts, so please share the fundraiser with friends! You can stop by the lobby to smell the samples.

Let's Stay Healthy This Year!

As we enter the heart of cold and flu season, please remember that teamwork is needed to keep our students and staff healthy. One of the best ways to help in this effort is by keeping your children home if they are ill. Please also remember that students should be fever-free for at least 24 hours (without fever-reducing medication) before returning to school.

In addition, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends each year that all children ages 6 months and older receive their flu vaccine by Halloween (but it's never too late). The CDC indicates that the annual flu shot typically reduces the risk of flu-related hospitalizations in children by 40 to 60%.

FALL FEST WAS THE BEST!

What a fantastic Fall Fest! Thank you so much to every parent who came out. The energy and excitement were incredible, and we truly love spending these fun-filled days with our Trident Academy students and their families.

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS:

Our 4th and 5th graders went on a field trip to the Old Exchange and Provost Dungeon. We learned about how it was used in the American Revolution, tying into our 4th grade social studies class. The students got to tour the dungeon and learn fun facts, like how George Washington danced on the floors of this very building! They were also able to sign a copy of the Declaration of Independence! They had so much fun!

Our 6th graders are bringing the Earth to the classroom! They are working hard on a hands-on science project to showcase the four spheres of the Earth, creating detailed displays using cardboard, tissue paper, and paint. We can't wait to see their creative habitats!

Our high schoolers are sharpening their entrepreneurship skills! We kicked off a fantastic day of learning with Milkshakes and Handshakes, where students practiced networking with business-minded parents. A huge thank you to high school parent Patrick McNulty for partnering with us through District C! He presented a real-life business problem that our students will now spend two weeks solving. We can't wait to see their key insights!

We are thrilled to be part of the James Island County Park Festival of Lights Greeting Card Contest this year! Our students have worked hard over the last few weeks to create a beautiful holiday card. Make sure you head to the park beginning November 14 to see our spectacular card on display!
