October is Learning Differences Awareness Month

Our First Pillar | Meeting Individual Needs

We provide each student with opportunities for successful learning at their pace and at their level.

Each year, we begin by assessing our students’ level of performance in reading, writing, and math in order to know what each student knows. From that initial testing, we determine where to begin the process of meeting their needs.

Additionally, each student’s learning profile is carefully studied by our teachers and staff. Those who work directly with the student will come to know which strategies and learning tools to use that will facilitate the most effective outcomes for that child. Our students come to trust these teachers completely because they understand why they need what the teacher provides. And, more importantly, they know their teachers are working with them to help them succeed.

Our teachers also learn to read their students’ body language and respond appropriately. Many times, a quick word of encouragement is all that is needed. A student’s whole day can turn around on this simple interaction. It happens as a result of students learning to trust that their teachers are in their corner. Trident students understand that their teachers care about them and want the very best for them.

Meeting our students where they are and helping them move forward is ingrained in Trident’s DNA. We strive to help students advance as quickly as they can, but also as slowly as they need. From my 30 years of experience with Trident Academy, the focus on Individual Needs has never wavered. I am proud to be the leader of such a fine group of educators who truly seek the best for their students.

Enjoy fall break! We’ll see everyone on Tuesday.

Blessings,

Betsy

The "Fastest Man on Earth" is Dyslexic!

Each week during Dyslexia Awareness Month, we will highlight a noteworthy person who has persevered in the face of learning challenges.

Noah Lyles, a sprinter with multiple world championships and Olympic medals, has been a powerful voice in raising awareness about his personal experience with dyslexia, anxiety, and ADHD. Despite the challenges associated with his learning differences, Lyles has achieved extraordinary success on the global stage, demonstrating that dyslexia does not have to be a barrier to achieving greatness. He often speaks about the importance of finding alternative learning strategies and the support he received to navigate academics while pursuing his elite athletic career.

By sharing his story, Noah Lyles encourages students to embrace their unique learning styles and not feel limited by their diagnosis. He emphasizes that dyslexia is simply a part of who he is, not a definition of his potential. Lyles's willingness to be open about his struggles and triumphs helps to destigmatize learning differences, fostering an environment where young people feel comfortable seeking the help they need. His message is a crucial reminder that strength comes in many forms, and understanding and advocating for one's own learning needs is a sign of true resilience and a key to unlocking personal success.

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS:

What a successful week at the Scholastic Book Fair! Our students had a wonderful time picking out some amazing new books to dive into. We love seeing their enthusiasm for reading!

Our lower school students combined two of their favorite things: art and Legos! This week, they designed a Lego masterpiece, carefully covered it in ink, and pressed it onto canvas to create one-of-a-kind art prints.

It was our 5th graders' turn this week to spent time this week with Ms. Norton learning team-building skills. They were able to build a tower of cups without touching them!

Why do onions make you cry, and how can you smell Febreze across the room? Our students figured it out! They explored particle movement and diffusion, proving that science is happening all around us.
