October is Learning Differences Awareness Month

Every October, we celebrate our differences at Trident Academy. As you know from our mission statement, we serve students with language-based learning differences, which include dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia. But what do these terms mean, and how do we, at Trident Academy, work toward remediating them?

According to LDonline.org: “Language-based learning disabilities (LBLD) encompass a spectrum of cognitive and behavioral differences in processing, comprehending, and using language. Students with LBLD commonly experience difficulties with listening, speaking, reading, writing, spelling, math, organization, attention, memory, social skills, perseverance, and self-regulation. However, a teaching style that is specialized and structured enables students with LBLD to succeed.”

At Trident Academy, we create a structured, distraction-free learning environment and use a multi-sensory approach to teaching all subject matter. From ELA and OG to math, science, and social studies, it is common for our students to be moving around the room, creating projects and reports, showing what they know, and having fun while actively engaged in their learning.

Over the next four weeks, we will explore the four Trident Academy pillars, which are integral to our school ethos and fundamental to our students’ success.

Enjoy this beautiful fall weekend!

Blessings,

Betsy

Each week during Dyslexia Awareness Month, we will highlight a noteworthy person who has persevered in the face of learning challenges.

This week, we celebrate Princess Beatrice, who has transformed her experience with dyslexia into a powerful mission for advocacy and support. Diagnosed at age seven, she now uses her royal platform to share her personal journey and champion the view that dyslexic thinking is an asset and a "gift." She urges students to understand that "Dyslexia is not a pigeonhole... It is an opportunity and a possibility to learn differently." As an ambassador for the charity Made By Dyslexia, she emphasizes that her unique mindset actually pushes her further to solve challenges.

Despite initially struggling with reading and spelling, her relationship with books was transformed by the Harry Potter series, which showed her the power of reading subjects that held her interest—a turning point that helped her earn a dual college degree. Princess Beatrice is now committed to systemic change, working with organizations to achieve the goal of training every teacher and workplace to spot, support, and empower every dyslexic mind by 2030. Her powerful message is clear: "You have magical brains, they just process differently."

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS:

After listening to Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken, students demonstrated their understanding by illustrating the key events of every chapter. It's reading comprehension, visualized!

In PE our students played a game that moved from cooperative to competitive, focusing on throwing and striking to sharpen their hand-eye coordination.

Our 4th graders spent time this week with Ms. Norton focusing on essential team-building skills. Their challenge? Building a tower of cups without touching them!

Our lower school students had a fantastic field trip to the Fire Museum this week. They learned crucial lessons about fire safety while having a blast exploring fire trucks and even getting to slide down a fire pole!

Our art classes are blooming with creativity! This week, students learned to build 3D flowers using wire and papier-mâché. We love seeing all the fantastic new projects coming out of the art room this year!
