High School Morphology Project: Using a single, thought-provoking photograph as their inspiration, our students embarked on a descriptive narrative assignment. The core requirement was to seamlessly incorporate words using the morpheme -able (meaning "capable of or suitable for").
Students then used their analytical skills to color-code the affixes within their stories. This visible breakdown allowed them to actively synthesize meaning by combining the core meaning of the base word with the meaning of the affix, leading to a deeper inference of the entire word's meaning.
The project went beyond just creative writing. To ensure a thorough understanding of the linguistic rules at play, each student also created a detailed Spelling Rules Explanation Page. This component required them to articulate the specific spelling rules they applied when attaching the suffix -able to various base words (e.g., the "drop-the-silent-e" rule).
Finally, students transitioned their narratives into dynamic presentations using Google Slides. They selected visually engaging images that not only enhanced their story's narrative flow but also cemented the descriptive power of the words they chose.
The quality of the work was fantastic! This project beautifully illustrates how strong foundational instruction in morphology empowers students to become more confident, precise, and sophisticated writers. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and analytical thinking displayed by our students!
