WEATHER UPDATE

When It Rains ...

I have been in several meetings in the last week where we have gleefully spoken about our lack of tropical weather this year.

And now…we do.

We are closely watching the weather and will be in touch over the weekend as things develop. At this time (Friday afternoon), the models seem to indicate that we could experience some tropical weather on Monday and/or Tuesday.

For those new to the Charleston area, we could experience flooding, high winds, and bridge closures. It appears that the system that will be named Imelda may become a hurricane early Monday as it leaves the Bahamas, heading toward the Carolinas. That’s the worst-case scenario being tossed about today. It could also be dragged out to sea by Humberto, the other hurricane in the vicinity.

We take the safety of our families and staff seriously; it is a huge responsibility, and we will always err on the side of caution. Sometimes it happens that we call off school and nothing serious occurs. I’d much rather that be the case than have the opposite scenario.

Please keep your devices handy over the weekend. We will send a message via text and email once we have more clarity on the weather system’s strength and trajectory.

Hopefully, we will all be back together on Monday morning as usual!

Blessings,

Betsy

WHAT'S HAPPENING ON CAMPUS:

High School Morphology Project: Using a single, thought-provoking photograph as their inspiration, our students embarked on a descriptive narrative assignment. The core requirement was to seamlessly incorporate words using the morpheme -able (meaning "capable of or suitable for").

Students then used their analytical skills to color-code the affixes within their stories. This visible breakdown allowed them to actively synthesize meaning by combining the core meaning of the base word with the meaning of the affix, leading to a deeper inference of the entire word's meaning.

The project went beyond just creative writing. To ensure a thorough understanding of the linguistic rules at play, each student also created a detailed Spelling Rules Explanation Page. This component required them to articulate the specific spelling rules they applied when attaching the suffix -able to various base words (e.g., the "drop-the-silent-e" rule).

Finally, students transitioned their narratives into dynamic presentations using Google Slides. They selected visually engaging images that not only enhanced their story's narrative flow but also cemented the descriptive power of the words they chose.

The quality of the work was fantastic! This project beautifully illustrates how strong foundational instruction in morphology empowers students to become more confident, precise, and sophisticated writers. We are incredibly proud of the hard work and analytical thinking displayed by our students!

This week, our upper school Play to Code club took on a new challenge: Virtual reality (VR)! Students learned how to use the technology while putting their skills to the test with a classic game of Angry Birds.

Our PE classes are mastering "Zone Strikers," a game that combines striking and net/wall skills with a focus on hitting a target.

A huge thank you to Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) for a fantastic visit with our middle and high school students! It was an incredible opportunity for our students to learn about creative careers and the wide range of amazing programs SCAD has to offer.

Our 2nd and 3rd graders are soaring into STEM! They’re creating and flying paper planes to learn about measurement and distance.
