SPECIAL NOTICE:

HARTFORD PUBLIC LIBRARY’S DOWNTOWN LIBRARY CLOSED

This morning at 9:32 a.m., a report was received of smoke in the basement at Hartford Public Library’s (HPL) Downtown Library, 500 Main Street. Public safety teams were immediately dispatched to the scene. The incident resulted in a power outage at the Downtown Library and City Hall, 550 Main Street. No injuries have been reported at this time.

Upon arrival, responding units encountered heavy smoke and an active fire in an electrical unit. It was later determined that an Eversource transformer located in the basement had blown, sparking the fire.

"We’re incredibly grateful to our first responders for their swift and coordinated efforts,” said Bridget E. Quinn, HPL President and CEO.  “I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to our dedicated Library staff for their commitment to safety throughout this challenging situation. We continue to work closely with the City of Hartford, our public safety partners, and Eversource to monitor developments and ensure power is safely restored to all affected areas."

The Hartford Fire Department, Hartford Police Department, and Eversource worked swiftly and collaboratively to isolate the issue and contain the fire. The situation was brought under control at 10:43 a.m.

HPL, in collaboration with the City of Hartford, is investigating ways to reopen to the public as soon as possible.

Stony the Road: Reconstruction, White Supremacy, and the Rise of Jim Crow

Henry Louis Gates Jr.

New York Times Bestseller |100 Notable Books of 2019

"Stony the Road presents a bracing alternative to Trump-era white nationalism. . . . In our current politics we recognize African-American history—the spot under our country’s rug where the terrorism and injustices of white supremacy are habitually swept. Stony the Road lifts the rug."

—Nell Irvin Painter, New York Times

"An excellent introduction to the Redemption period for new readers and a reminder to experts of why the era is still so crucial to American history."

Annette Gordon-Reed

New York Times Bestseller |Best Book of the Year 2021 |Times Critics Top Books of 2021 |10 Best Books of 2021 | Winner of the Pulitzer Prize

As Juneteenth morphs from a primarily Texan celebration of African American freedom to a proposed national holiday, Gordon-Reed urges Texans and all Americans to reflect critically on this tangled history. A remarkable meditation on the history and folk mythology of Texas from an African American perspective."

—Booklist Online

One of the things that makes this slender book stand out is Gordon-Reed’s ability to combine clarity with subtlety, elegantly carving a path between competing positions, instead of doing as too many of us do in this age of hepped-up social-media provocations by simply reacting to them."

"Love does not require taking an uncritical stance toward the object of one’s affections. In truth, it often requires the opposite. We can’t be of real service to the hopes we have for places—and people, ourselves included—without a clear-eyed assessment of their (and our) strengths and weaknesses."
