The National Civics Bee® is a national competition that encourages young Americans to engage in civics and contribute to their communities. Participating 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students flex their civics knowledge for a chance to win recognition and cash prizes. Finalists who advance to the national competition will compete for prizes worth more than $50,000.

The National Civics Bee® was created because informed and active citizens make for a strong country, a strong economy, and a strong workforce, and our continued prosperity depends on the strength of all three. The Athens Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to bring the Civics Bee to Athens in 2025.

LEAD Athens Government Session

LEAD Athens Class of 2025 enjoyed their Local Government session, where they gained an understanding of ACC Government structure, funding, and operations. The class heard from the Acting City Manager, Assistance Finance Director, Capital Projects Director, ACC Police, Traffic Engineer, Solid Waste Director, and more!

Joy Village is BACK IN BUSINESS!! Thanks to the newly passed Georgia Promise Scholarship Act, there is new funding available to bring Athens’ only Black-centric private school back to life in the fall of 2025 to serve grades 6-8!

St. Mary’s Center for Rehabilitative Medicine (Inpatient Rehab Hospital) has been recognized on Newsweek’s list of America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers 2024. This prestigious award is presented by Newsweek and Statista Inc., the leading statistics portal and industry ranking provider. The America’s Best Physical Rehabilitation Centers 2024 ranking awards the leading physical rehabilitation facilities in the U.S. that were identified according to the definition of Inpatient Rehabilitation Facilities (IRFs) by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).

Athens-area residents will wade into local rivers and streams as part of the continuing statewide campaign to clean and preserve Georgia’s waterways. Rivers Alive is a volunteer cleanup program initiated by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division and organized across Georgia by several local organizations.

Volunteers in Athens will gather on Saturday, October 19 from 8:30 AM to 12:00 PM to participate in the annual waterway cleanup. Volunteer check-in will be at 8:30 AM at Dudley Park where breakfast and t-shirts will be provided. Volunteer teams will relocate to their assigned cleanup sites shortly after the kickoff celebration.

Hungry pets in our community need you right now! AAHS need 20+ bags of dry dog and cat food to help support hungry pets in our community. In 2024 so far, they have given out over 32,000lbs of pet food, and that number will continue to grow.
