Dear William Paterson Faculty and Staff,

I am proud of the effort the everyone has made to keep the William Paterson community safe during the pandemic, which has allowed us to continue with a fall semester filled with campus-based learning and a full slate of in-person extracurricular events. As we head into the heart of autumn, it’s important to remember that keeping ourselves and each other safe extends beyond COVID vaccines and protocols, so I encourage everyone to get their flu shots. Faculty and staff can take advantage of the on-campus flu shot clinic scheduled for this Wednesday, October 27, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. in University Commons, Room 171 A/B. The shots are no-cost for WP employees, but please bring your insurance card. Walk-ins are welcome as time permits, but you can reserve your spot by calling 973-685-4961 or sending an email.

A recent report by the New Jersey Association of State Colleges and Universities (NJASCU), a nonprofit higher education association of which William Paterson is a member and where Trustee Fred Gruel and I serve on the Board, recently released a comprehensive economic impact study highlighting member institutions’ contributions to the State of New Jersey. Among the report’s key findings: NJASCU member institutions annually produce some $6.1 billion in economic activity in New Jersey, generating an estimated $220 million in tax revenue for the state each year; and the seven member institutions—Kean University, New Jersey City University, Ramapo College of New Jersey, Stockton University, The College of New Jersey, Thomas Edison State University, and WP— offer a strong return on investment, producing $16 million in economic activity for every $1 million New Jersey invests. I encourage you to take a closer look at the report, linked from this story, which can help us all be stronger advocates for public higher education in the State.

This week’s WPWe are Proud – If you want truly local weather information, check out William Paterson’s Environmental Science Weather Station, which has officially joined the New Jersey Weather and Climate Network at the request of State Climatologist Dr. Dave Robinson of Rutgers University. At WP’s official station site No. 3591, you can scroll through real-time weather data in addition to accessing tabulated data in five-minute, hourly, and daily intervals. In addition to providing rich data for use by WP students and faculty, the station will contribute to forecast models for local news channels. Congratulations to Professor Nicole Davi, Environmental Science Chair; Laboratory Technician Michael DaSilva; and student Dayanara Magallanes, President of WP’s environmental sustainability club, The Green League, for leading this development and to everyone involved in its operation.

I hope everyone has a great week.
