Dear RRPC Family & Friends,

This Sunday May 31 will be the second in our summer Adult CE series on C.S. Lewis. We will look at one of his earliest books after his conversion entitled The Problem of Pain. In it Lewis deals with one of the most difficult subjects in all of Christian theology-suffering. Lewis deals with the suffering we bring up ourselves (for instance, from binge drinking) to the suffering that seemingly comes out of nowhere (being hit by lightning or suffering a major illness). Lewis examines how we as Christians respond to these issues. And to cap off his work, Lewis deals with the ultimate in suffering (hell) as well as animal suffering.

The second work we will examine is one of his final books entitled A Grief Observed. Late in life Lewis married Joy Davidman Gresham and it was a beautiful marriage. However, after a few years together Joy was diagnosed with cancer and suffered physically and mentally until she died.

Lewis describes the emotional, mental and spiritual suffering he went through as a result of her untimely death. Now the focus shifts to one's faith in the midst of such anguish.

Lewis is somewhat critical of his earlier work The Problem of Pain, that it was perhaps a bit glib about suffering. In this work Lewis bares his soul and cries out to God in his loss and grief.

So hope to see you Sunday after worship for the second Lewis seminar.

Peace and hope,

Frank

Birthday Celebration

& Pentecost Sunday

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who attended our Birthday Celebration this past Sunday! The food was fantastic!

And a HUGE THANK YOU to all who helped organize it and make this event possible. Many people were involved and Shirley wants to express her thanks to everyone who helped: at least a dozen between set up, during and cleanup!!

2 Cents-a-Meal:

Keep the Cornucopia Full!

THIS Sunday, May 31, the

2 Cents-a-Meal Offering will be received and given to Storehouse West.

For many in our community, SHW provides access to a cornucopia of nutritious food. Because of the current economic conditions of rising inflation and job losses, many families cannot afford to purchase food. At the same time, SHW’s resources are being squeezed by inflation, affecting how much food they can purchase and keep on hand. Single parents, the disabled, persons with limited education and job skills, and retirees are among those most in need of help. Your gifts can put food on their tables, a smile on their faces, and give them a sense of hope. Please give as you are able. The Mission Committee thanks you for caring for our neighbors.

And a P.S. - Want to give more often? Look for the jar labeled for Storehouse West in the narthex on Sunday mornings and drop in your spare change or spare dollars. Every little bit adds up to make a difference for those in need. Thank you!

Presbyterian Church:

The First 25 Years 1986-2011

Helen Huntley took on the huge job of researching and putting together a history of RRPC. Members provided photos and memories

and proofreading of the final document but it was the huge effort of Helen that made this history a reality. Nowhere in this publication

does she take credit. We do so now.

We honor and thank her for this contribution to our beloved church.

If you bring and leave anything in the kitchen, the fridge or freezer, please label it with your name, date, and who/what it is for. If left unlabeled, it might be thrown away. It is very helpful to know what each item is intended for. Thank you so much.
