Pentecost Sunday

Join us this Sunday 10:00 a.m. as the Dr. Ryan Baer will preach a sermon entitled We've Got Spirit, Yes We Do! The scripture lessons for this week are Acts 2:1-4 and Galatians 5:16-26.

Pentecost, the birthday of the church, falls seven weeks after Easter (50 days). Pentecost celebrates the gift of the Holy Spirit, the third person of the Trinity, the giver and renewer of life, who instills our faith and enables us to follow Jesus Christ. Symbols of Pentecost include the dove plus those derived from the story in Acts 2: wind, fire, and the color red for flames.

This Sunday, the choir will sing Gracious Spirit, Dwell with Me, by K. Lee Scott, as the anthem.

You can follow the livestream of the service on Facebook or YouTube. For instructions to follow livestream through Facebook or YouTube, click here. Find the text from previous weeks' sermons, along with a copy of the bulletin, here.

Pentecost Offering

Psalm 71 testifies that a foundation of faith established during childhood helps ensure lifelong faith and service. By donating to the Pentecost Offering, you are nurturing the faith of those who are the church to come — children, youth, and young adults.

This year, your Mission and Outreach Commission has selected the Clarke County Mentor Program (CCMP) to receive a portion of the Pentecost offering (40%). Their mission is “to recruit, train, and support community volunteers to mentor Clarke County School District children in order to help them reach their full potential.” Starting with a group of only 30 people in 1991, today CCMP serves hundreds of children in Athens-Clarke County with mentors from our local community and the University of Georgia. The remaining 60% is used to support children at risk, youth and young adults through ministries of the Presbyterian Mission Agency.

Please mail your check to the church office, or go to our website firstpresathens.org/giving, then select “Pentecost Offer” under “Select a Fund.” Thank you for your generosity!

"Everybody Hurts (Sometimes)"

For three Sundays in June, the Congregational Care Commission will be offering a 3-week series called “Everybody Hurts (Sometimes)”. This series is back-by-popular-demand and will focus on three unique areas of human experience that are painful and challenging – we will hear personal stories, professional perspectives, and offer resources for continued healing.

The topics this year are: Suicide Prevention (June 15), Caregiving (June 22), and Aging (June 29). We will meet in the Moses Waddel Room from 11:15 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. each of those weeks, and light breakfast items will be available. Please reach out to Whitney with any questions (whitney@firstpresathens.org) -- we hope you will plan to join us for these important conversations.

Nursery and Children’s + Youth Sunday school will be offered during that time.

Summer Choir

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to the sing in the choir, but have never done so, this may be a chance to give choir a “test drive.” If you would like to sing but can’t make the commitment to Wednesday night rehearsals during the regular season, this is the time to join the choir. Beginning Sunday, May 25, through August 17, we will meet in the choir room at 9:15 a.m. on Sundays to rehearse music for that morning’s service. Singers may join for any single Sunday or for as many as they wish, even for the whole summer. There is no obligation, but we do hope some will decide they enjoy singing in the choir enough to continue in the fall. Although this choir is made up mostly of adults, youth and children are also welcome. For more information, contact John Coble at jcoble@firstpresathens.org.

Come to the Well: Exploring God’s Love Through Stories of Water
