God's Work. Our Hands., Soup and Socks Saturday: November 6

Dear Ones,

MISSION OUTREACH for the month of October is our adopted school: Liberty Traditional School. As part of the Faith Based Council for the Humboldt Unified School District, each of the member churches is assigned to one of eleven schools, often one that is near them. As the sponsors for LTS, we have done many things to support the school, including work days for clearing weeds and beautifying the campus, purchasing sports equipment, providing gift cards for Teacher Appreciation Week, buying tables for the Teacher of the Year banquet so that the teacher and student essay writers could attend the event and much more. For several years we provided an afterschool art program when the school didn’t have a dedicated art teacher. We work closely with the Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) as we can no longer just give checks as donations; we have to purchase and donate specific items. Last year we paid the Scholastic Inc. subscription fees for the whole school for the year. When the school needs something, we are the first ones they call! We are waiting for a wishlist from the PTO and school principal, Danette Derickson, to let us know what we can assist with this year.

Stardust Shine New Members.png

We are excited to receive new members on this Sunday, October 3, during worship. We call it Homecoming Sunday! We encourage you to make a phone call to a friend or pewmate who you haven’t seen in worship for a while to come to service the Homecoming Celebration! The Care and Nurture Ministry Team will be dropping off pumpkin muffins to our shut-ins so that they can be part of this special day as well.

BIG NEWS!

Next Sunday, October 10, we will celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Francis of Assisi with a special Blessing of the Animals Service. It will be a single service at 10am OUTSIDE. Please bring your own lawn chair and a jacket since we expect the temps to be around 70 degrees. All well behaved animals are invited to be blessed at this fun service!

Thank you to everyone who helped us meet the New Commercial Refrigerator Challenge! The fridge has arrived, and the Firemen Movers of Prescott (off duty local firemen) came yesterday and moved three fridges to get us all set! The four young men who did the moving were very efficient and professional. I would recommend them to anyone who needs movers! If you get a chance on Sunday, wander into the Fellowship Hall and check it out!

Updates on the Tuesday 10am Women’s Bible Study and the Wednesday 10am Lectionary Bible Study

The Tuesday 10am Women’s Bible Study meets both in-person in the Fellowship Hall and on Zoom. If you aren’t on Pr. Tricia’s Zoom email list and would like to attend the group that way, please send her an email at [email protected].

The Wednesday 10:00am Lectionary Study group, led by Hal Vogelaar and Larry Gordon, is meeting in the Fellowship Hall. Masks are required except when you are eating or drinking.

Hal and Mai Vogelaar are teaching a class at Yavapai College through the Prescott Community Education program! It will be the four Thursdays in October.

The Outreach Ministry Team has planned our God’s Work. Our Hands. activity this year for Saturday, November 6. The event is called Soup and Socks Saturday. We are inviting different groups within the church to provide the makings for a hot soup (two gallons) which we will cook in our kitchen and then will be giving it away to the community on Saturday! Folks will be encouraged to donate new socks that will be given to the Humboldt Unified School District Resource Center. We have procured two Thrivent Action Cards to help defray the cost of the take-out containers and some of the soup fixings! If you are a Thrivent member and haven’t used your Action Cards this year, please see Mary in the church office about ways you can use them to assist the ministries at Emmanuel.

Last week the Building and Property Ministry Team was featured in our newsletter. You never know what you might see when you head out to the church parking lot! Yesterday, I found Dana Diller and John Baggenstos working on the irrigation system for the trees and plants in our parking lot. Dana is standing in a really big hole! They had to dig down almost five feet to find the pipe that was heading north between the islands in the parking lot. This hardworking team makes sure our church grounds and building are looking crisp and neat. Next time you see one of them, make sure you tell them thank you!

It's time for this week's Ministry Team feature!

The Fellowship Ministry Team is ably led by Marjie White and Kyle Smith. This team facilitates our Sunday Morning Fellowship which for right now during our Covid precautions is coffee and treats on a cart, either outside on the patio or in the church narthex depending on the weather. Volunteers for this team help with setup, serving and clean up for the fellowship hour between worship services. We currently need people to help on Sunday mornings; please contact the church office or Marjie White if you can assist with this fun and important activity.

Here are other things this ministry team oversees:

  • Funeral Receptions: The team provides food or assist in serving, set up and clean up of Fellowship Hall for bereaved families and friends who have had a loved one’s memorial service at Emmanuel. (Marjie White)
  • Wedding Receptions: The team assists in decorating the church and Fellowship Hall, setting up, serving and cleaning up of wedding receptions at Emmanuel.
  • Special Events: Provide needed assistance for all church events that occur only once or on an annual basis, such as the Advent Celebration or Fall Fun Fest. (Nancy Smith, Lora Lee Nye)
  • Young at Heart: This group of seniors, age 50+, meets monthly for lunch, programs and fellowship and to contribute to the life of Emmanuel in many ways. If you are a lively senior who is really young at heart, join them. (Pastor; Meals: Carole Rebholz) This event has been on hiatus as we continue to observe our Covid precautions. We continue to watch the impact of the Delta variant in our community, and when things improve, we hope to begin meeting again.

Interfaith Climate Action Team

Just before the pandemic started last year, we (Gary and Jean Kiser) became involved in a class on climate change. The class was informative, timely and made us aware how quickly climate change is affecting the earth. It eventually led us to becoming members of and representing Emmanuel on the Interfaith Climate Action Team (ICAT).
