Weekly Word | August 12, 2022 | Issue 53

We know that many of you are looking forward to travelling during the summer. Don’t forget to drop off or mail in your offering or pledge before you go! Summer is often a time of decreased giving but we still need to keep the lights and the AC on!

The six-month giving statements are out, check your church mailboxes; Mary will be putting them in the mail next week!

August Outreach:

Navajo Mission School

The Navajo Lutheran Mission School is a small not-for-profit school with a rich 50-year history of providing quality education to the Rock Point community on the Navajo Nation. Many of the children enrolled in the school have parents who attended the Mission when they were young and want the same education for their own children. Navajo children in the Rock point community have the choice of a faith-based education which puts focus on the Navajo language and culture. The Navajo School provides a Christian school to nurture the Christian lifestyle among the young people of the community. Click on the logo to visit their website!

Progress Pride Flag added to the Pride Flag

~Gene Fougner

About a year ago, you probably noticed this flag appear on our Emmanuel Lutheran website. I always wondered what it meant. Maybe you have too.

Daniel Quasar, who identifies as queer and nonbinary, designed this flag. The white, pink, and light blue reflect the colors of the transgender flag, while the brown and black stripes represent people of color and those lost to AIDS.

The LGBT pride flag (the original-colored stripe flag underneath) was created in 1978 by San Francisco artist Gilbert Baker. Originally the flag included eight stripes. Each of the current colors has a meaning; red means life, orange means healing, yellow means sunshine, green means nature, blue means harmony, and purple means spirit.

The Outreach Ministry Team and the special event team of Nancy Smith and Lora Lee Nye are meeting during the Outreach team regular meeting time next Monday, September 12, at 9am. They are working on the plans for the 30th Anniversary celebration of the chartering of Emmanuel Lutheran as a congregation of the ELCA (September 23, 2022). See Nancy Smith if you have ideas!

Some things in the works include:

  • Celebration Sunday, September 18 There will be a 10am worship service followed by a catered luncheon. The service and lunch will be in the sanctuary with rented round tables and tablecloths. Bring your favorite dessert for a dessert potluck!

  • God’s Work. Our Hands. Celebrated for a month: Sunday, September 11 – October 9, with many activities suggested. Here are just a few:
  • singing at nursing homes
  • giving goodie baskets to nurse’s stations in hospitals
  • cleaning our Adopted Road, Civic Drive
  • sprucing up the church including washing the windows
  • providing lunches for Habitat for Humanity builds
  • working on a project at our adopted school, Liberty Traditional

We are collecting a list of all the ways that Emmanuelites serve our neighbors. Do you volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, the Prescott Valley Food Bank, People Who Care, Meals on Wheels, at one of our hospitals or at our local library or some other volunteer opportunity? Send an email to the church office or let Pr. Tricia know as you are leaving worship, so we can create a list of some of the ways that the members of Emmanuel are showing love for our neighbors in our community! I’ve gotten several—keep them coming!

Bible Study and Groups Summer Schedules

  • The Grief Group meets on the second and fourth Friday of the month at 1:00pm in the nursery. Chaplains from Good Samaritan Hospice are facilitating.

  • The Tuesday 10am Women’s Bible Study starts again on Tuesday, August 16, reading Jesus Feminist by Sarah Bessey. The group can be hybrid: in person and Zoom, contact Pr. Tricia for details.

The following groups are on hiatus until September:

  • The Caregiver Support Group will gather again in September.

  • The last Tuesday of the month Bible study at the Prescott home of Karen and Bruce Lamb is on hiatus and will start up again at 9:30am on September 27.

  • The Wednesday 10am Lectionary Study group led by Hal Vogelaar and Larry Gordon meets in the Fellowship Hall and will resume September 7.

  • The Thursday evening Bible Study meets at the Rebholz’ home. Gathering at 6:30pm for dessert (always amazing by Carole), the study starts at 7:00pm. This group begins again September 7.

One more call for newbies to join the Inclusivity Team! We have a fun job thinking up and executing deeds of welcome from writing and artwork to activities: from researching to implementation of Lutheran practices we never knew existed.

We try to be positive and optimistic in everything we do because we carry “good news”. Pastor Tricia will help guide the projects we take on. Don’t worry if you have a vacation now and then, we keep on with those present. The group meets on the second and fourth Mondays at 11 am, currently via ZOOM. Call Gene at 928-713-0591.

COVID News

We are recommending the current CDC guidelines that suggests everyone now wear masks inside during the summer spike of Covid-19. Our mask wearing criteria has been a positivity rate above 5%, and this past week the rate has gone down to 18.7% (in the medium risk range).

Please continue to wear a mask if you are at high risk or are protecting a loved one who is and stay home if you are feeling unwell.

We will continue with our other pandemic protocols, like checking in at the welcome table before worship.

Nametags, please!

Please remember to wear your nametag in worship for a while, and keep an eye out for our new members: Deborah Delmastro, Connie Gromada, Michael and Cheryl Leigh, Doris and Roger MacGregor, and Lorna Paulus. Take a moment and introduce yourself!

If you have lost your name tag and need a new one, let Mary in the church office know and she will make you another. And you can always grab a paper nametag at the check-in desk if you left yours at home.

So… You’ve seen the bell choir ringing and drumming at the services and you’re wondering, “When can I learn?”

The dates to come play with bells and drums are August 15 and 22 at 4:30 PM. No experience is perfect. Reserve at 928-713-0591.

The next Interfaith meal is Friday, August 26 with a sit-down meal in the Fellowship Hall as well as curbside pick-up. Extra help is needed to make this possible. Set up, serving, bussing and washing dishes, and clean up help is needed on Friday morning and meal prep on Thursday. Please let Mary know if you can be available to assist.

Are you a Thrivent member? If so, please consider using your Community Action Cards to help with the cost of these meals. Click on the picture to visit the Thrivent website!

We are sorry to share the sad news of the passing of Ruth Martindale yesterday, August 11, in Cave Creek.

We will hold a memorial moment in the next few weeks.

A memorial service for Leonard Meyers, husband of charter member Margaret Damschroder-Meyers, will be tomorrow. Len died early Wednesday morning, August 3.

Len's memorial service:

Saturday, August 13, at 1:00pm

Sunrise Funeral Home

8167 State Route 69

Memorial Moment will be held during both worship services on Sunday, August 14, for Sylvia Leaf, who passed July 29. Her family will attend worship.

Please keep their friends and families in your prayers.

This song has always been a favorite; here is Matt Maher and Lizzie Morgan singing “Leaning”.

Let my yes be yes, O Lord.

Rhonda King caught this shot at sunset Wednesday night: Granite Mountain in the clouds!

If you are traveling this week, be safe and send us pictures!
