Dear Ones,

MISSION OUTREACH for September is the HUSD Hungry Kids Program. This program is for all children in our school district. Bags filled with food are distributed each Friday during the school year to the children who qualify for subsidized meals. At the end of the last school year, the program was handing out over 150 bags each week. Food items in each backpack can include some of the following:

  • a loaf of bread
  • small jars of peanut butter and jelly
  • fruit snack cups
  • ramen noodles
  • individual cereal packs
  • tuna
  • ravioli
  • spaghetti O’s
  • an apple
  • orange
  • raisins

The food is packed on Friday mornings.

Molly Duren is the new coordinator for the program, and she is looking for volunteers to stuff bags on Fridays. There are two locations: Humboldt Elementary, and the old district building across from Little Dealer-Little Prices on N. Truwood Drive. See Pr. Tricia about connecting with Molly! We are collecting food items as well as monetary donations for the program so they can purchase items as needed.

The ARK is getting full!

We are collecting new stuffed animals for the Yavapai Family Advocacy Center. The animals will be given to children whose families are in crisis. They have a wonderful closet they keep stocked for children to choose one for their very own. They currently have a lot of bears and bunnies, so are looking for a variety of different animals to fill out their supply. We will collect through Friday, September 24.

Thank you to everyone who helped us meet the New Commercial Refrigerator Challenge! The fridge has arrived, and we are waiting for the professional movers to get it into its final location in the kitchen proper. The total cost of the new unit is about $4200. The Fellowship Ministry will take $2100 out of their budget, and we have raised the remaining $2100! We actually have raised more than we initially needed, and the extra funds will help pay for the movers and installation costs. Thank you for supporting the Interfaith Meal ministry and our own Fellowship Ministry by donating to this challenge.

Updates on the Tuesday 10am Women’s Bible Study and the Wednesday 10am Lectionary Bible Study

The Tuesday group will meet next week in person and on Zoom to firm up what the next weeks will look like. If you aren’t on Pr. Tricia’s email list for Zoom and would like to attend the group that way, please send her an email at [email protected].

The Wednesday Lectionary Study group led by Hal Vogelaar and Larry Gordon is meeting at 10am on Wednesdays. Masks are required except when you are eating or drinking.

Hal and Mai Vogelaar are teaching a class at Yavapai College through the Prescott Community Education program! It will be the four Thursdays in October.

Our potential New Members are invited to a Meet and Greet on Saturday, September 25 at 5:00 p.m. in the courtyard. The church council and Ministry Team Coordinators will be there, and we are excited to receive new members on Sunday, October 3 during worship. We are calling that Sunday Homecoming! If you are considering becoming a member at Emmanuel or just want to learn more about Emmanuel and what it means to be a Lutheran Christian in the world today, please let Pr. Tricia or Mary (in the office) know. We are making phone calls in the next week to those we have listed as visitors.

We are also encouraging everyone to make a phone call to a friend or fellow pewmate that you haven’t seen in worship for a while to come to service that Sunday, it will be a Homecoming Celebration! See the postcard in Sunday’s worship folder for prompts on what to say when you call!

The Outreach Ministry Team has planned our God’s Work. Our Hands. activity this year for Saturday, November 6. The event is called Soup and Socks Saturday. We are inviting different groups within the church to provide the makings for a hot soup (two gallons) that we will cook in our kitchen and then will be giving it away for free to the community that Saturday! Folks will be encouraged to donate new socks that will be given to the Humboldt Unified School District Resource Center. We hope to procure two Thrivent Action Cards to help defray the cost of the take-out containers and some of the soup fixings! If you are a Thrivent member and haven’t used your Action Cards this year, please see Mary in the church office!

It's time for this week's Ministry Team feature!

The Outreach Ministry Team, with Coordinator Nancy Smith, meets on the second Monday of each month at 9:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. This team is very active managing our Monthly Mission Outreach, where church members have the opportunity to contribute to a featured local nonprofit organization that presents its story at the worship services on the first Sunday of the month, when possible. One of our primary outreaches is to our adopted school, Liberty Traditional School. As part of the HUSD Faith-Based Committee, we work closely with the school principal and the PTO to assist in meeting needs that have included sporting equipment and art supplies, teacher and staff appreciation gifts and meals, “Scholastic” subscriptions, supporting the Teacher of the Year Banquet, and more!

Here are just a few of the Outreach projects:

Food Bank, Interfaith Meal, Prescott Habitat for Humanity, Quilters, Spring Fling...

Click here to see details of the many projects the Outreach Ministry is involved with. (So many that an extra page is needed!)

Thank you to everyone for continuing to mask during worship and while in the church building for meetings and activities. We are all weary of mask-wearing and the need to social distance, but we are loving our neighbor when we protect ourselves and others from the virus.

Keep an Eye on Your Inbox!

Watch for a special email heading out on Wednesday, September 22, from Council President Julie Pavri.

Interfaith Climate Action Team

Just before the pandemic started last year, we (Gary and Jean Kiser) became involved in a class on climate change. The class was informative, timely and made us aware how quickly climate change is affecting the earth. It eventually led us to becoming members of and representing Emmanuel on the Interfaith Climate Action Team (ICAT).
