Grand Canyon University Free Concert

The Lost Birds

The Sacred Veil

Friday, February 7 at 7pm

Join us for a concert featuring the Canyon Chorale, Critical Mass, with guest artists and members of The Canyon Symphony Orchestra, Mr. Mark Fearey, piano, and Dr. Juan de Dios Hernandez, music director and conductor.

This concert features two works that speak of the love and loss of life from two different perspectives. “The Lost Birds” is a musical memorial to bird species driven to extinction by humankind. Sweeping and mournful, it’s a haunting tribute to those soaring flocks that once filled our skies but whose songs have since been silenced. It celebrates their feathered beauty: their symbolism as messengers of hope, peace, and renewal. But it’s also a warning about our tenuous existence on the planet: the fate that befell these once-soaring flocks foreshadows our extinction.

Composer Eric Whitacre writes of his work: “The Sacred Veil” is a 12-movement work and the most recent collaboration between Eric Whitacre and poet/lyricist Charles Anthony Silvestri telling a story of life, love, and loss. Silvestri’s wife, Julie, died at age 36 in 2005, leaving two young children. The intimate, compelling score tells a story of courtship, love, loss and the search for solace and includes Silvestri, Whitacre and Julie’s texts. Although inspired by this extraordinary friendship, the piece does not mention Julie by name and shares a human journey that so many of us can relate to. No cost to attend.

Other concerts at La Casa de Cristo include:

A Valentine Concert with Scottsdale Philharmonic on Sunday, February 9 at 4:00pm in the Sanctuary

and

Sonoran Desert Chorale on Sunday, February 23 at 3:00pm in the Sanctuary.

'Souper' Bowl of Caring

Saturday, February 8th - 5:30pm - 6:15pm

Sunday, February 9th - 8:45am - 11:30am

Eagles or Chiefs? The Big Game is almost here, and it's time to make a difference for the hungry. Next weekend, February 8/9, in an effort to support hunger relief, our youth will greet you outside after each service to take a collection to benefit the PV Community Food Bank. Pastor Jeff will reveal his pick with a "pastoral prophecy!" You’ll also make your own Super Bowl pick with your donation.

Look for the youth outside the Sanctuary or Gathering Place with the labeled soup pots with the team names, or click here to give online. Let's see if we can surpass last year's total and predict the winner! The REAL winner is, of course, the PV Community Food Bank. Thank you!!

Our ministry, and the need to support children in foster care, continues to grow! Do you have someone in mind that would make a good volunteer at camp? Invite them to the Info Night.
